Cold atmospheric plasma (CAP) has just recently been showing promising anti-cancer activities supported by ability to induce cell death via apoptosis and cell cycle arrest leading to tumor cell destruction in vitro, and in vivo. Several studies showed the ability of CAP-activated media to modulate the tumor cell environment a link between the generation of reactive oxygen species/reactive nitrogen species and cancer cell death following CAP treatment. Targeting cancer cells through ROS-mediated mechanisms has become an attractive strategy for effective and selective cancer treatment by exploiting the aberrant redox characteristics of cancer cells. These effects support the potential direct (CAP) and indirect (CAP-activated media) applications for adjuvant anti-cancer therapeutics, in a combination with the chemo-, radio-, and nano-therapies.

Non‐thermal atmospheric pressure plasma has attracted considerable attention in recent years due to its potential for biomedical applications. Determining the mechanism of the formation of reactive species in liquid treated with plasma is thus of paramount importance for both fundamental and applied research. In this work, the origin of reactive species in plasma‐treated aqueous solutions was investigated by using spin‐trapping, hydrogen and oxygen isotopic labelling and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy. The species originating from molecules in the liquid phase and those introduced with the feed gas were differentiated by EPR and 1H NMR analysis of liquid samples. The effects of water vapour and oxygen admixtures in the feed gas were investigated. All the reactive species detected in the liquid samples were shown to be formed largely in the plasma gas phase. It is suggested that hydrogen peroxide (determined by UV/Vis analysis) is formed primarily in the plasma tube, whereas the radical species ⋅OOH, ⋅OH and ⋅H are proposed to originate from the region between the plasma nozzle and the liquid sample.

A novel non‐thermal atmospheric‐pressure plasma jet source for endoscopic application is presented. Specific challenges in the endoscopic plasma source development, such as small dimensions, flexibility, operation in half‐closed cavities, and the avoidance of in‐tube plasma, are addressed. Besides plasma characterization of the jet freely operating in ambient air, special focus is laid on the investigation of in‐cavity operation. In order to avoid saturation of the cavity atmosphere with the feed gas and at the same time allow a distinct jet formation, a second gas with electronegative properties is introduced as shielding gas. Depending on the flow rate ratios between feed gas and the shielding gas, arcing and jet‐to‐glow transition can be suppressed.
