Abstract: Epidemiological evidence has highlighted the association of specific diets and a lower incidence of cancer. Foremost, the Mediterranean diet provides high levels of polyphenolics and a high consumption of healthier fats, e.g., as from olive oil. In the Mediterranean region the consumption of vegetables is elevated providing a class of compounds, the isothiocyanates (ITCs) as found in the cabbage family. The ITCs have raised great interest for their health benefits over the past few decades. Some of the key ITC… Show more

“…Several epidemiological experiments have indicated an inverse correlation between the dietary consumption of Brassicaceae vegetables and the incidence of cancer [ 71 ]. Glucosinolates and ITCs as their degradation products are widely known for their preventive and cytotoxic properties in various cancer cell lines [ 71 , 72 , 73 ] by modulation of epigenetic targets [ 74 ]. Thus, ITCs are known for their anti-proliferative, pro-apoptotic, anti-inflammatory, anti-migratory, and anti-angiogenic effect against several cancers [ 74 ].…”

“…Thus, ITCs are known for their anti-proliferative, pro-apoptotic, anti-inflammatory, anti-migratory, and anti-angiogenic effect against several cancers [ 74 ]. Among them, PEITC belongs to the key ITC compounds with multifaceted molecular mechanisms and known for anti-inflammatory effects and potential chemopreventive and anti-tumor properties [ 71 , 73 , 74 ]. As reviewed only recently, PEITC has found to exert potential anti-cancer effects, among others, against breast, colorectal, glioblastoma, lung, oral, ovarian, and prostate cancer [ 74 ].…”

“…Cancer is a major public health problem and the second leading cause of mortality around the world (Beheshtirouy et al, 2021). In the treatment of cancer, immune response, protein dysfunction, specific gene mutations, disorders of intracellular signal transduction pathways had been targeted in the past 2 decades (Yeger et al, 2021). Among them, tumor immunotherapy, as a new type of treatment, has played an antitumor effect through immune regulation, and shown significant clinical effects (Dashti et al, 2016;Shamseddine et al, 2021).…”

“…The importance of phytochemicals lies in their superior properties of reducing side-effects, efficacy in chronic conditions, cost-effectiveness, and widespread usage of natural compounds. The manuscript by Kushwaha et al [8] has proposed using phytochemicals in cancer chemotherapy having a promising future. Through in silico approach, the authors have shown that the phytochemicals present in Bulbine frutescens (Asphodelaceae) are involved in the mitigation of anticancer drug mediated drug resistance.…”

“…Another review article published by Yeger and Mokhtari [ 9 ] discussed the isothiocyanates family of naturally occurring small molecules generated from the glucosinolate precursors of cruciferous vegetables. The cancer chemopreventive roles of some key isothiocyanates such as sulforaphane, phenethylisothiocyanate, and benzyl isothiocyanate have been studied in preclinical and clinical settings.…”
