INTRODUCTION: Leprosy in Brazil is a public health issue, and there are many regions in the State of Espírito Santo with high endemic incidence levels of leprosy, characterizing this state as a priority for leprosy programs. The aim of this study was to determine the spatial distribution of coefficients of new cases of leprosy in the State of Espírito Santo, Brazil. METHODS: We conducted a descriptive and ecologic study based on the spatial distribution of leprosy in the State of Espírito Santo between 2004 and 2009. Data were gathered from the available records of the Espírito Santo State Health Secretary. The global and local Bayesian empirical methods were used to produce an estimate of leprosy risk, smoothing the fluctuation effects of the detection coefficients. RESULTS: The study resulted in a coefficient adjustment of new cases in 10 towns that changed their classification, among which, 2 went from low to medium, 4 from medium to high, 3 from high to very high, and 1 from very high to hyper-endemic. An average variation of 1.02, fluctuating between 0 and 12.39 cases/100,000 inhabitants, was found in a comparative calculation between the Local Ebest value and the average coefficient of new leprosy cases in the State of Espírito Santo. CONCLUSIONS: The spatial analysis of leprosy favors the establishment of control strategies with a better cost-benefit relationship since it reveals specific and priority regions, thereby enabling the development of actions that can interfere in the transmission chain.

Estudo descritivo, com o objetivo de analisar variáveis relacionadas aos contatos de pacientes com hanseníase atendidos no município de Londrina, num período de dez anos. Os dados foram obtidos das fichas de comunicantes e do SINAN. Dentre os 1055 casos de hanseníase, foram registrados 3394 contatos, com média de 3,2. Os indivíduos mais expostos possuem até 40 anos de idade (71,5%), sendo filhos/a (40,6%) e esposo/a (17,8%). Foram examinados 1731 (51,0%) contatos, dos quais, 183 apresentavam algum sinal de hanseníase: confirmados 16 casos, descartados 47 e não concluíram a investigação 120 (65,6%). A maioria dos contatos (51,6%) foi exposta às formas multibacilares e 10,1% comprovaram a efetivação de duas doses da BCG. Conclui-se que está havendo falhas no acompanhamento dos contatos.

Objective:To assess the impact of extrinsic factors on fine motor performance of children aged 2-years old.Methods:73 children attending public and 21 private day care centers were assessed. Day care environment was evaluated using the Infant/Toddler Environment Rating Scale-Revised Edition (ITERS-R), fine motor performance was assessed through the Bayley Scales of Infant and Toddler Development-III (BSITD-III), socioeconomic data, maternal education and time of start at the day care were collected through interviews. Spearman's correlation coefficient was calculated to assess the association between the studied variables.Results:The time at the day care was positively correlated with the children's performance in some fine motor tasks of the BSITD-III, showing that the activities developed in day care centers were important for the refinement of specific motor skills, while the overall fine motor performance by the scale was associated with maternal education and the ITERS-R scale sub-item “language and understanding”.Conclusions:Extrinsic factors such as higher maternal education and quality of day care centers are associated with fine motor performance in children attending day care.
