Personality Characteristics of Drug Addicts and Alcoholics on the Millon Clinical Multiaxial Inventory

Abstract: The Million Clinical Multiaxial Inventory (MCMI) was administered to 106 alcoholics and 100 addicts in separate VA inpatient rehabilitation treatment programs. The alcoholics scored higher on the personality style scales of Avoidant, Passive-Aggressive, Schizotypal, Borderline and Paranoid, while the opiate addicts scored higher on the Narcissistic personality disorder scale. Separate cluster analyses for both groups further revealed common personality styles among both groups. Several MCMI scales showed signi… Show more

“…The comparison of cluster solutions on the concurrent validity variables helped determine whether increasing numbers of clusters were accompanied by increasing validity. We also considered the number of cases assigned to each cluster and regarded with a suspicion of unreliability (i.e., unlikely to generalize to other samples) any solution with subtypes consisting of fewer than 10% of the entire sample. Some studies have cluster analyzed the Axis I and II scales separately (Donat et al, 1991;Mayer & Scott, 1988), whereas others have combined them (Bartsch & Hoffman, 1985;Craig et al, 1985Craig et al, , 1997Donat, 1988). We first analyzed the axes separately to determine whether the empirically derived clusters resembled the a priori Axis I and II protocol-sorted subtypes.…”

“…Testing took place after 7 days of treatment in order to exclude individuals suffering from acute withdrawal. Participation was voluntary, and all subjects signed a consentfonn. We compared our results with those of 5 studies (4,8,(19)(20)(21) that had used the MCMI-I (Table 1).To better understand the specificity of SD, our results were also compared with those on clinical samples from Quebec. The first comprised 180 subjects treated for erectile ororgasmic disorders.…”
