Impregnation of plant fibre reinforcements by a molten polymer involves many phenomena still poorly understood, related to the solid morphology and its surface chemistry, but also to the temperature effect on liquid properties and solid/liquid interactions. The present work focuses on the temperature effect on forced dynamic wetting, using the Wilhelmy method and two model materials: a cellulosic film and two totally wetting paraffin oils. The results show that the dynamic contact angle vs. the capillary number (Ca) plot appears as a master curve. This curve is split in two domains. The domain associated with Ca>10 −3 is well described by the hydrodynamic approach. The domain with Ca<10 −3 corresponds to wetting processes operating on a smaller scale, which are more sensitive to the physico-chemical heterogeneities of the substrate. This study addresses the mechanisms governing the capillary pressure, void formation and interface generation during composite manufacturing.

A systematic experimental study was performed to detect the compaction and permeability properties of multilayered biaxial and quadriaxial preforms under vacuum pressure. Compression response on ply level showed that the degree of nesting between quadriaxial NCF was more pronounced and the nesting deformation mechanism was affected by the interaction with stitch yarns. Owing to the meso-channels in the fibrous structure and the nesting between layers, the in-plane permeability of quadriaxial NCF did not follow an inverse proportion relationship with the fiber volume fraction. To predict the in-plane permeability of multilayered quadriaxial NCFs, unit cell models at a high level of geometrical details were built, including local variations in yarn cross-sections and the nesting deformation between layers. Numerical methods were implemented, and the prediction results were in very good agreement with the experimental data. Besides, the major contributing parameters to the enhancement of the in-plane permeabilities were identified by investigating the correlation between permeability and structural parameters of quadriaxial NCF. The modeling methodology and the principles established can be applied to the design of the quadriaxial NCF fabrics, where the permeability enhancement was evidenced.

The permeability of mesh wicks is important for various applications, including two‐phase heat transfer. However, the understanding of the permeability of single‐layer, free‐standing mesh wicks, with liquid–gas interfaces on both sides, is limited. A novel and simpler method is presented to determine the permeability of a free‐standing wick and apply it to a representative mesh. This method involves modifying the capillary pressure via elevation and simultaneously measuring the permeability to determine the permeability‐capillary pressure relationship. When applied to a copper mesh with plain weave having undergone surface cleaning, the permeability is found to decrease as capillary pressure for deionized water increases. A dimensional analysis is presented to generalize this data for other mesh sizes with similar weaves and fluids. The behavior of mesh in application is modeled, based on the integration of Darcy's law with an analytic function fit to measured data, and parametric studies are conducted to investigate the superficial velocity of liquids through the mesh under varying driving pressures, transport lengths, and liquid viscosity, based on the obtained capillary pressure–permeability relationship. This study provides valuable insights into the transport properties of mesh wicks, with potential applications in fields such as electronics cooling, electrochemical devices, and fluid purification technologies.
