Peripheral Oxidative Stress Biomarkers in Mild Cognitive Impairment and Alzheimer's Disease

Abstract: Oxidative stress has been associated with normal aging and Alzheimer's disease (AD). However, little is known about oxidative stress in mild cognitive impairment (MCI) patients who present a high risk for developing AD. The aim of this study was to investigate plasma production of the lipid peroxidation marker, malonaldehyde (MDA) and to determine, in erythrocytes, the enzymatic antioxidant activity of catalase, glutathione peroxidase (GPx), glutathione reductase (GR), and glutathione S-transferase (GST) in 33… Show more

“…As peripheral oxidative stress predicts AD (Berr et al ., 2000; Torres et al ., 2011), our results may suggest that oxidative damage to the vasculature caused by dietary AGEs is associated with Aβ aggregation in the brain.…”

“…Increased levels of oxidative stress biomarkers in the blood reflect such stress in the brain [8,9] . Currently, many blood markers of oxidative stress have been identified in AD patients or related animal models, including protein carbonyls and 3-nitrotyrosine [10,11] , , malondialdehyde (MDA) [12] , 4-hydroxynonenal (4-HNE), and F2-isoprostanes (F2-IsoPs) [13][14][15][16] .…”

“…37,38 It was the same for several investigations on glutathione peroxidase or reductase and catalase activity in AD. 37,39,40 In contrast, data on the analysis of total antioxidant defense were more univocal through the literature. The TAS assay usually works as an indirect measure of the resistance of serum to be oxidized by an oxidant (see Materials and Methods).…”
