“…The steatosis score was evaluated and classified according to the percentage of cells with steatosis, within a scale of 5 degrees: 0, absent or present in <5% of hepatocytes; Grade 1, ≥5% and <25%; Grade 2, ≥25% and <50%; Grade 3, ≥50% and <75% and Grade 4, ≥75%. The evaluation of inflammation and necrosis followed the following classification: 0: none; 1: <2 foci/field; 2: 2–4 foci / field; 3: >4 outbreaks/field …”

“…A similar model has been used previously in several other studies (Dos Santos Carvalho et al, 2017;França et al, 2017;Vasconcelos et al, 2019). The animals were divided into three groups: control group (n = 8), which received no treatment or induction of periodontal disease; periodontitis (n = 8), and bromelain (n = 8), which received intraperitoneal treatment with bromelain (bromelain from pineapple stem, Sigma-Aldrich®, São Paulo, SP, Brazil) 15 mg/kg for 20 days + induction of periodontitis.…”

“…Blocks of hepatic tissues, 6-9 samples per group, with 1 mm 3 of lateral and medial lobes were processed. 9 Ultrasections were examined using a TEM (JEM 1400; JEOL) at 80 kV. A digital camera system (Gatan) was used to capture the images.…”

“…2,3 Periodontitis causes damages not only to the periodontal tissues, but also alters other organs 4,5 and the liver. Studies have revealed an important relation between periodontitis and hepatic alterations [6][7][8][9] Investigations with different methods have sought to ameliorate periodontal damages, 10,11 but that is still a challenge to periodontology. This challenge opens up opportunities for the exploration of new drugs from natural origin as the αTPN, which is a volatile monoterpene, the main compound of the essential oils found in plants of the species: Croton sonderianus ('Marmeleiro black'), Eucalyptus globulus ('Eucalyptus'), and Melaleuca qinquenervia ('Niaouli').…”
