Filling-in phenomenon in patients with age-related macular degeneration: differences regarding uni- or bilaterality of central scotoma

“…The lesion consisted of an old spontaneous disciform scar in four cases and a macular photocoagulation atrophic scar in ten cases. Nine of the latter were treated by perifoveal photocoagulation, according to the technique described by Coscas et al [5]. With this technique, the peripheral part of the choroidal neovascularization is treated by laser photocoagulation, but patients gradually lose their central fixation when central atrophy occurs, resulting in an absolute central scotoma [13].…”

Mapping the human retina
