Performance of TMDI for Tall Building Damping

Abstract: This study investigates the vibration reduction of tall wind-excited buildings using a tuned mass damper (TMD) with an inerter (TMDI). The performance of the TMDI is computed as a function of the floor to which the inerter is grounded as this parameter strongly influences the vibration reduction of the building and for the case when the inerter is grounded to the earth whereby the absolute acceleration of the corresponding inerter terminal is zero. Simulations are made for broadband and harmonic excitations of… Show more

“…More specifically, the SATMD equipped with a displacement-based GH controller had the best performance by reducing the fore-aft and side-to-side damage equivalent loads by around 12% and 64% respectively. Weber et al (2020) investigated the performance of a tuned mass damper equipped with an inerter (TMDI). The authors mentioned that the floor on which the inerter is grounded is directly related to the performance of the TMDI.…”

“…Again, as discussed above, the mass of the liquid cargo of the FPSO is variable and hence cannot always be relied on to provide a large inertia. This issue can be resolved by the use of a tuned mass damper inerter (TMDI), in which the TMD is connected to the primary structure and a two-terminal inerter device, one of which is attached to the TMD mass and the other is either grounded or attached to the primary structure (Weber et al, 2020).…”

“…Several types of DVA have been developed to meet various needs (in some felds, DVA is also called tuned mass damper (TMD)): TMDinerter (TMDI) compounding the conventional TMD with an inerter device. Te inerter in the introduced TMDI confguration provides a "mass amplifcation efect" [10]. Particle dampers are robust and reliable and can be used to dampen vibrations in lightly damped structures, especially in harsh environments [11].…”
