Abstract: Abstract. The neutron time-of-flight facility n TOF features a white neutron source produced by spallation through 20 GeV/c protons impinging on a lead target. The facility, aiming primarily at the measurement of neutron-induced reaction cross sections, was operating at CERN between 2001 and 2004, and then underwent a major upgrade in 2008. This paper presents in detail all the characteristics of the new neutron beam in the currently available configurations, which correspond to two different collimation syste… Show more

“…The aim of this preliminary study is to compare neutron and alpha-induced signal shape, in order to explain the neutron measurements described in Section 3. The detector coupled to EC2 was placed in the n_TOF (CERN, CH) [25] neutron beam for about one month [26]; in Fig. 7 some signals induced by neutron interaction on 12 C are shown.…”

“…ime-of-Flight (TOF) technique is based on a pulsed neutron beam, spanning over a wide range of energies, travels a given distance before reaching the detector under study [2]. In this work, the kinetic energy of the neutrons is determined by calculating the difference between the timestamp reported by the analog-digital-converter (ADC) of each neutron event in the Helium-4 detector and the start time of the generator pulse.…”

“…The outputs of the TOF measurement can be used in many neutron spectrometry applications such as detector light response calibration and mathematical spectrum unfolding [3]. The relative energy resolution of a TOF measurement is shown in (1) [2] as a first approximation. The moderation time in the target-moderator assembly, and the detector response, contribute to the fact that even for neutrons with a given kinetic 1 Submitted on 6/1/2017.…”

“…At the neutron time-of-flight n_TOF facility [4] at CERN, neutrons produced by spallation of 20 GeV/c protons on a lead target travel through an evacuated beam line of 185 meters before reaching the experimental area. The cross section measurements consist then in measuring, as function of the time-of-flight of the neutrons, the reactions occurring in a sample intersecting the beam.…”
