Performance of the COMPASS-31 questionnaire with regard to autonomic nervous system testing results and medication use: a prospective study in a real-life setting

Abstract: The aim of this study was to investigate the performance of the Composite Autonomic System Score-31 (COMPASS-31) questionnaire in a real-life setting in consecutive patients referred to the laboratory for objective testing of the autonomic nervous system (ANS), with the hypothesis that COMPASS-31 results differ depending on medications and findings of the tilt table test results. One hundred seventy-one consecutive patients (125 females, mean age 41.5 ± 19.3) referred for testing of the ANS were enrolled. Befo… Show more

“…Since its publication in 2012, the original US English version of COMPASS 31 has been used in many studies [8][9][10][11][12][13] and proved to be a reliable and practical self-assessment Table 3 Comparison of total scores and sub-scores assessed with the original English and the German COMPASS 31 versions in 20 patients with neurological disorders and 20 healthy participants Data are expressed as mean ± standard deviation. P-values of the comparison between the English and German version scores are shown below the scores.…”

“…Since its publication in 2012, the original US English version of COMPASS 31 has been used in many studies [ 8 13 ] and proved to be a reliable and practical self-assessment questionnaire to quantitatively evaluate the autonomic symptoms among patients with various neurological and other disorders [ 5 , 7 , 14 ].…”

“…The sum of all the weighted domain scores yields a total COMPASS score between 0 and 100, representing minimum and maximum autonomic symptoms scores, respectively. The COMPASS‐31 has been shown to have excellent test–retest reliability, and internal validity, especially in the OI, vasomotor, gastrointestinal, and pupillomotor domains (Schultz et al, 2019 ; Treister et al, 2015 ) and has been validated in individuals with autonomic dysfunction (Ruška et al, 2018 ).…”

“…Literature suggests medians and ranges for healthy volunteers = 10 ± 8 (mean age 46.6 years), peripheral neuropathy = 21 ± 13 (mean age 59.5 years), and neurogenic autonomic failure = 39 ± 18 (mean age 57.4 years) ( 30 ). Several drugs have an influence on the autonomic nerve system, including beta blockers, ACE inhibitors, calcium channel blockers, alpha-1 blockers, and antihistamines ( 33 ).…”
