Performance of IRS on malaria prevalence and incidence using pirimiphos-methyl in the context of pyrethroid resistance in Koulikoro region, Mali

Abstract: Background: Koulikoro Health District is one of three districts of Mali where the indoor residual spray (IRS) has been implemented from 2008 to 2016. With widespread of resistance to pyrethroid, IRS was shifted from pyrethroid to pirimiphos-methyl from 2014 to 2016. The objective of this study was to assess the added value of IRS to LLINs on the prevalence of parasitaemia and malaria incidence among children under 10 years old. Methods: A comparative study was carried out to assess the effects of pirimiphos-me… Show more

“…4 It is of note that none of the trials that evaluated the impact of adding IRS with a “non-pyrethroid-like” insecticide assessed outcomes beyond two years. More recently, observational studies evaluating the effectiveness of pirimiphos-methyl (Actellic 300CS®) in “real world” settings have documented impressive impacts of IRS in Mali 8,9 , Ghana 10 , Zambia 11 , Kenya 12 , and Uganda. 7 This analysis contributes to observational data on the impacts of sustained IRS beyond 6 years, in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic and a switch to products containing the active ingredient clothianidin.…”

“…These results are in line with those of previous studies concluding that the use of IRS can reduce the prevalence and incidence of malaria. The use of this IRS can also reduce the length of Plasmodium infection ( Kané et al., 2020 ). This is because IRS can prevent contact with malaria vectors at home, even for those who do not use ITNs while sleeping ( Wagman et al., 2021 ; West et al., 2015 ).…”
