Performance of CarbaNP and CIM tests in OXA-48 carbapenemase-producing Enterobacteriaceae

Abstract: This study applied two phenotypic tests, namely "Carbapenemase Nordmann-Poirel" (CarbaNP) test and "Carbapenem Inactivation Method" (CIM), against the isolates carrying the carbapenem resistance genes. The study included 83 carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae isolates producing oxacillinase-48 (OXA-48) and 30 carbapenem-sensitive Enterobacteriaceae isolates. Out of the total isolates studied, 77 isolates (92.77%) were identified as Klebsiella pneumoniae and six isolates (7.23%) were identified as Escherich… Show more

“…A recent study from Turkey tested 77 isolates of K. pneumoniae and found that 74 isolates (89.16%) produced OXA-48 carbapenemase, whereas nine isolates (10.84%) produced both OXA-48 and NDM-1 by both phenotypic tests included CarbaNP test and CIM test [29]. Genotypic characterization of ESBL and carbapenemase genes by the Check-MDR CT102 was fully in agreement with phenotypic testing in the detection of 8 MBL in study by Somily et al [30].…”

“…In Istanbul, Turkey, the Ambler class D β-lactamase OXA-48 was initially identified from a carbapenem-resistant isolate of K. pneumoniae. In our country, β-lactamase OXA-48 is the most common carbapenemase, but recently, the association between OXA-48 and NDM-1 has been reported frequently [3,4].…”

“…Yıldız et al [22] have conducted phenotypic tests on carbapenemaseproducing strains (OXA-48 and NDM-1) and they found that CarbaNP and carbapenem inactivation method tests were suitable for describing carbapenem producers. In a study, NDM-5 has been shown to increase the MIC values for ceftazidime, cefotaxime, and cefepime comparing with NDM-1 [23].…”
