Performance issues in wireless body area networks for the healthcare application: a survey and future prospects

Abstract: This study presents a survey of the current issues, application areas, findings, and performance challenges in wireless body area networks (WBAN). The survey discusses selected areas in WBAN signal processing, network reliability, spectrum management, security, and WBAN integration with other technologies for highly efficient future healthcare applications. The foundation of the study bases on the recent growing advances in microelectronic technology and commercialization, which ease device availability, minia… Show more

“…However, world population reports higher susceptibility to age-related diseases that can be addressed by health technology. Wireless Body Area Network (WBAN) has been explored as a healthcare technology that can monitor blood pressure, blood sugar level or other physiological variable that prevent catastrophic events [ 45 ]. WBAN architecture involves a dense network of sensor and actuators distributed in the body that interact with a coordinator that sends information outside the WBAN, a smartphone is normally used as a gateway.…”

“…In such a remote monitoring context, the wireless BSN (WBSN) system has specific requirements such as high reliability, low power consumption, and high data security. In addition, a WBSN can involve off-body, on-body, and in-body sensors; thus, we can differentiate extra-WBSN and intra-WBSN communication [ 5 ]. Connectivity solutions mostly use radiofrequency (RF) wireless technologies through different standards such as Bluetooth Low Energy among others [ 6 , 7 ], with air then being the communication medium.…”

“…Remote healthcare systems gain high attention, with the recent advances of sensory manufacturing, and the great evolution in telecommunication industry. There are many literatures that consider developing remote healthcare systems based on WBAN [11][12][13]. However, rare literatures consider integrating WBAN with IoT paradigm.…”
