Performance evaluation of biofil toilet waste digester technologies in Ghana: the efficacy of effluent treatment options

Abstract: The study was carried out to assess the efficacy of a standard Biofil toilet digester with regard to its effluent quality and to evaluate the performance of new effluent polishing options being developed by BiofilCom. Influent and effluent were collected from 18 standard Biofil digesters connected to full-flush toilets. Effluent from five pilot installations with improved effluent polishing options were also taken for analyses. Ten other Biofil installations were selected to assess the impact of digester efflu… Show more

“…Option generation is complicated by the emergence of many novel technologies in the recent years, especially for on-site sanitation and semi-centralized systems (e.g. Amoah et al 2016, Larsen et al 2016, Parker 2014, Tilmans et al 2015, Tobias et al 2017. While novel technologies increase engineering flexibility and allow resource recovery, they also substantially increase the complexity of creating decision options.…”

“…We have taken the list of potential Techs from the Compendium of Sanitation Systems and Technologies (Tilley et al 2014b). To showcase the integration of novel options, we added 'vermi-composting' (Amoah et al 2016, Lalander et al 2013, 'struvite precipitation', and 'struvite application' (Dalecha 2012) to the list. These technologies have been tested in similar regions and shown to be promising.…”

“…For these reasons, it is crucial that sanitation technologies are selected that prove appropriate in a specific context. At present, there are over 50 technologies available and more are being developed [15][16][17][18][19]. Many are suitable to be implemented on a decentralized basis, independent from sewers, energy or even water.…”
