In this paper, we examine routing protocols with the shortest path in sensor networks. In doing this, we propose a genetic algorithm (GA)-based Ad Hoc On-Demand Multipath Distance Vector routing protocol (GA-AOMDV). We utilize a fitness function that optimizes routes based on the energy consumption in their nodes. We compare this algorithm with other existing ad hoc routing protocols including LEACH-GA, GA-AODV, AODV, DSR, EPAR, EBAR_BFS. Results prove that our protocol enhances the network performance in terms of packet delivery ratio, throughput, round trip time and energy consumption. GA-AOMDV protocol achieves average gain that is 7 to 22% over other protocols. Therefore, our protocol extends the network lifetime for data communications.

Abstract-Mobile Ad-hoc Networks (MANETs) are mobile, multi-hop wireless networks that can be set up anytime, anywhere without the need of pre-existing infrastructure. Due to its dynamic topology the main challenge in such networks is to design dynamic routing protocols, which are efficient in terms of consumption of energy and producing less overhead. The main emphasis of this research is upon the prominent issues of MANETs such as energy efficiency and scalability along with some traditional performance metrics for performance evaluation. Two proactive routing protocols used in this research are single-path AODV versus multi-path AOMDV. Extensive simulation has been done in NS2 simulator, which includes ten scenarios. The simulation results revealed that the performance of AOMDV is more optimal as compared to AODV in terms of throughput, packet delivery fraction and end to end delay. However, in terms of consumption of energy and NRL the AODV protocol performed better as compared to AOMDV.

Ad hoc on-demand distance vector (AODV) is one of the commonly used reactive routing protocols in mobile ad hoc network (MANET) as it can achieve relatively better communication performance. However, AODV can lead to heavy routing overhead and additional delay due to the flooding broadcast of route request (RREQ) packets during the route discovery cycle. Additionally, the multiple route reply (RREP) packets in response to a single RREQ can also contribute to overhead and additional delay. Thus, a new algorithm called Less Flooding-AODV (LF-AODV) was proposed to reduce the broadcasted RREQ and the transmitted RREP during the route discovery cycle by decreasing the number of nodes involved in the route establishment phase. A simulation test was carried out to compare the difference in performance between LF-AODV and AODV algorithms. The simulation test revealed that the steps of the route discovery process in LF-AODV were significantly reduced, thus improving its performance in terms of packet delivery fraction, end-to-end delay and routing overhead compared to the traditional algorithm. Clearly, these results reinforce the theoretical principles used in formulating the new algorithm of LF-AODV.
