Objective: To investigate the differences amongst the LTO (Long Term Orientation) profile of graduate students in two academic programs. Design/methodology/approach: A total of 66 students participated in the study. The items of each construct corresponded to the two dimensions established by the original LTO scale. The validity test for the measurement scale was based first on exploratory and then on confirmatory factor analysis. The internal reliability consistency of the multi-item scales was assessed with Cronbach’s α. Independent sample t-tests were applied to verify the hypothesis. Results: The eight-item LTO scale performed reasonably well, lending support for its internal validity for the sample. The engineering students had higher levels for the planning dimension, still there were no significant differences in the estimates (t=-.391, p=.697), and students of the tourism program rated higher for the tradition dimension compared to the engineering students (t=3.557, p=.001). Limitations/implications: The study focus only in one personality trait. Education providers can draw upon these findings a better understanding of their students, becoming relevant for the curriculum. Findings/Conclusions: Students of the tourism academic program score higher in the tradition dimension of the LTO profile. On the contrary, there was no difference regarding the planning factor of the LTO profile. Therefore, LTO scale might be useful for understanding students’ decisions and personal orientations, allowing for academic programs to better focus their curriculum.

In contrast, Valdez-Cuervo et al (2013), conducted a study that aimed to define profiles of 146 postgraduate students in science and engineering based on their perception of the importance and development of scientific skills. Likewise, Espinoza and Gonzalez (2014), sought to know what were the motives and reasons that a group of young persevering people expressed to continue their studies towards a PhD and their results show that different personal and social expectations have motivated them to consider as the best option to continue their studies towards postgraduate degree.…”

The objective of this investigation was identifying the lifestyles of the postgraduate students of the Universidad Santo Tomás -Colombia. For the WHO (2013), lifestyles are considered as a general form of human being's life centered in the interaction of life conditions and individual patterns of behavior. This research is a quantitative descriptive interpretative study. The sample was confirmed by 186 postgraduate students, of which 53% were men (n=99) and 47% were women (n=87), with age 35.5±14.5 years and who studied the academic space of Humanism, Society and Ethics during the first semester of 2020. A self-administration questionnaire with 15 questions on the Likert Scale proposed by Nahas (2013) was used to evaluate nutritional factors, physical activity, preventive behavior, social relations, and stress control. The results showed a negative lifestyle index is evidenced by postgraduate students in the variables of nutritional factors, physical activity and preventive behavior, which are part of the individual behaviors involved in daily life; on the other hand, a positive lifestyle index is presented in the variables of social relations and stress control, where students feel satisfied with their friendships and try to set aside time to relax. It is necessary to offer spaces through the university welfare that offer to the postgraduate students, programs of promotion and prevention of the health; likewise, to promote the conscience of a healthy lifestyle within the classes that are offered in postgraduate courses, so that these have a direct incidence in the integral formation of the students.

La contribución de la universidad a la sociedad se ve concretada en la formación de ciudadanos con las características que esta espera, individuos capaces de resolver problemáticas complejas con profesionalismo y sentido ético. En la actual sociedad del conocimiento, esta formación originó que las universidades transitaran de un modelo enciclopédico de mera transmisión de información a otro que fomente la formación de individuos capaces de afrontar la creciente complejidad de los fenómenos sociales y resolverlos con un enfoque integral, a partir de múltiples visiones. En el caso particular de los estudiantes de posgrado, este enfoque favorece el desarrollo de estudiantes con habilidades informacionales, tales como el manejo de tecnologías de información, habilidades críticas de fuentes de información así como el desarrollo de habilidades comunicativas y trabajo colaborativo en el entorno de la web 2.0. En México, las instituciones de educación superior reconocen la importancia de enseñar estas competencias científicas en sus estudiantes, pero sin descuidar los aspectos de ética y habilidades sociales como rasgos complementarios que les permitirán desempeñarse con éxito en la profesión.
