Abstract: SummaryBackground: Since the advent of AIDS, the anti-HIV therapy has developed significantly, including the highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) and the disease acquired a chronic characteristic. However, after the introduction of HAART, several metabolic alterations were observed, mainly related to the lipid profile.

“…However, within the same group, there was neither a reduction in lipids nor an increase in uric acid after the intervention. These data are in agreement with studies that demonstrate that lipid abnormalities are more evident among HIV-infected patients after the introduction of HAART [34][35][36][37] , and signifi cantly higher increases in lipids were observed when P Is were added to the antiretroviral scheme 38,39 . Therefore, it was observed that the compound employed did not provoke a signifi cant change in the lipid profi le of the study population during 3 months of dietary intervention.…”

“…Thus, some controversy exists with respect to metabolic changes in HIVpositive patients. Studies have likely shown confl icting results because they are limited by factors such as study design, patient selection, statistical analysis, relatively low event rates, and incomplete ascertainment of cases 5,13 .…”

“…Farhi et al [18] conducted a study at a university hospital in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, with 268 HIV patients and concluded that in male patients the prevalence of dyslipidemia was higher when compared to that of females, and that family history of dyslipidemia was directly related to the occurrence of dyslipidemia and the time of the use of HAART by patients.…”
