Abstract: The motivations which determine scientific endeavour, or cause the investigator to apply himself to a given problem, or affect the way in which problems and data are perceived, organized and reported, have attracted considerable recent interest. The present paper considers the case of a famous and dedicated investigator whose reports seized the imagination of masses of intelligent laymen and resulted in a major scientific controversy.
