“…The importance of the therapeutic relationship in treatment engagement has been well documented in previous research with veterans (Creamer & Forbes, 2004) and was further endorsed by participants in this study. A recent systematic review by Kantor, Knefel, and Lueger-Schuster (2017) cited a barrier to help-seeking specific to trauma survivors of being concerned about re-experiencing the traumatic events, as was found in this study, further endorsing the importance of a good therapeutic relationship.…”

In contrast, depression deterred participants from help-seeking which could be attributed to the nature of depression including fatigue, loss of activities, and hopelessness (Sherwood, Salkovskis, & Rimes, 2007).…”

“…concerns about re-experiencing. In contrast, little is known about facilitators which enable affected individuals to seek help (Kantor, Knefel, & Lueger-Schuster, 2017). Recent developments have highlighted the potential of smartphone applications to provide better access to psychoeducation, self-help strategies, and identifying oneself as a person who needs professional support (Olff, 2015).…”
