Abstract: Infection with the human immunodeficiency virus is commonly complicated by Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia. Therapy for P. carinii pneumonia is limited to a few drugs, most commonly trimethoprimsulfamethoxazole and pentamidine isethionate.
