Indonesia is one of wood craft producer. Indonesian crafts have been exported to many countries, such as Japan, Europe and America. Commonly, that crafts used chemical preservatives that identified not safe for environment. A lot of countries had banned the use of toxic preservatives such as arsenic and chromium-based preservatives. Therefore, it is important to use natural preservatives that are safer for human being and the environment. This research aimed to know the ability of Sambiloto (Andrographis paniculata) leaf extract to use as wood preservatives and to determine the preservative treatability of two woods, Mahoni (Swietenia mahogany) and Matoa (Pometia pinnata) woods as material for making interior products such as wooden batik crafts. Matoa and Mahoni wood were preserved by hot bath at temperature of ± 80oC using Sambiloto leaf extract with variation of concentration of 10%, 12.5% and 16.67% for immersion time of 1 hour, 2 hours and 3 hours. The retention value of each variation was calculated and compared with the preservative value for the interior product of SNI 03.5010-1.1999 (≥ 8 kg/m3). The results show that preservation of Matoa wood for indoor uses can be done using Sambiloto leaf extract with concentration of 12.5% and processing time of 2 hours. However, the retention values for Mahoni woods were lower than SNI for all treatment because of its extractive content that make it hard to be preserved.

The current climate emergency is a growing concern, while construction activities are one of the biggest causes. Therefore, research is needed that leads to the application of construction with environmentally friendly materials such as wood. In this study, the wood used is sengon wood (Falcataria moluccana) because it has very abundant availability. However, sengon wood has low strength and durability, so treatment is needed to improve the quality of sengon wood so that its potential can be utilized. There were seven test variables, namely untreated sengon sawn wood, vacuum pressure impregnation with 5%, 10%, 15% phenol-formaldehyde (PF) resin solution, cold immersion impregnation with 5%, 10%, and 15% PF. The results of this study showed that treatment of cold immersion concentrate PF 10% increases tensile strength parallel to fibre up to 91.5%, the biggest increase in value against one of the mechanical properties, but to improve the mechanical properties of the highest average is variable B with vacuum pressure treatment of concentrates 5% with the increase up to 9.1%. Regardless of the comparison of these variables, that the value of the mechanical properties of sengon wood as sawn wood without treatment already has the potential to be used as a construction material compared to the value of the lowest strength class of construction sawn wood material. According to this research, the average density of sengon wood is about 300 kg/m3 which tends to be categorized as a lightweight construction material, where the concept of a lightweight structure can trigger increased innovation in creating more varied architectural and structural designs.

Tisuk (Roxb ) is one of fast growing tree species widely planted in private forest mainly in Java Island. However one of the weaknesses of tisuk wood is the low durability which is categorized as durability class of III/IV. This paper studies the durability improvement of tisuk wood using Boric Acid Equivalent (BAE) with cold immersion method. The tisuk wood samples were taken from a private forest in Sukamulih Village, Sariwangi Subdistrict, Tasikmalaya Regency. The treatments applied were wood thickness (thickness of 2.5 cm, 5 cm, 7.5 cm and 10 cm); immersion time (3 days, 5 days and 7 days); and two preservative concentration (5% and 10%). Each treatment was replicated in 10 specimens (total of 240 specimens). The parameters measured were the retention and penetration of preservative solutions. The analysis of variance shows that the retention of the preservative solutions was significantly different for the wood thickness treatment but it was not significant for other treatments (immersion time and preservative concentration). Meanwhile, the penetration of the preservative solutions was not significantly different for all of the treatments. The retention and penetration of the preservative solution fulfilled the minimum standard required by Indonesian National Standard for wood preservation in all treatments. Based on the analysis, the wood preservation method recommended for tisuk wood using boron and boric acid solutions is 3 days of duration of immersion with concentration of 5% for all of wood thickness treatments (2.5 cm, 5 cm, 7.5 cm and 10 cm). Salah satu kelemahan jenis ini adalah tingkat keawetannya yang rendah (kelas awet III/IV). Dalam rangka meningkatkan masa pakai kayu tisuk, penelitian mengenai pengawetan kayu tisuk dengan larutan (BAE) melalui perendaman dingin telah dilakukan. Sampel kayu tisuk berasal dari hutan rakyat di Desa Sukamulih, Kecamatan Sariwangi, Kabupaten Tasikmalaya. Perlakuan yang diterapkan adalah tebal kayu (2,5 cm, 5 cm, 7,5 cm dan 10 cm), (3 hari, 5 hari dan 7 hari), dan konsentrasi bahan pengawet (5 % dan 10 %). Parameter yang diamati adalah retensi dan penetrasi bahan pengawet. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa retensi bahan pengawet berbeda nyata pada perlakuan tebal kayu tetapi tidak berbeda nyata pada kedua perlakuan lainnya. Sementara, tingkat penetrasi bahan pengawet tidak berbeda nyata pada semua perlakuan. Retensi dan penetrasi bahan pengawet menunjukkan nilai yang memenuhi persyaratan SNI.
