PEDOT:Poly(1‐vinyl‐3‐ethylimidazolium) dispersions as alternative materials for optoelectronic devices

Abstract: PEDOT formulations in acetonitrile have been synthesised using a phase transfer reaction involving two steps; being a polymerization in water and then a subsequent coagulation of the corresponding PEDOT by anion exchange. The strategy followed is to synthesise organic formulations using a less acidic stabilizer and fine‐tuned hydrophobic properties which are suitable for using in OLEDs as a HTL (hole transport layer), leading to an interesting starting point for OLED applications. “…9 Another popular topic of research is the polymerization of ionic liquid monomers. [10][11][12][13][14][15] As a result, an increasing number of new polyelectrolytes named poly(ionic liquids) are being developed with an expanded properties profile which are finding new applications in energy, 16,17 biomedicine, [18][19][20] analytical chemistry, 21 functional materials, 22,23 carbon precursors, 24,25 dispersion technology, [26][27][28] gas membranes or CO 2 absorption materials [29][30][31] among others. 12 Ionic liquid chemistry is having also an impact in the optimization of several emulsion polymerization processes.…”

“…23] 3,4-Ethylenedioxythiophene (EDOT,S igma Aldrich, 97 %) and poly(diallyl dimethyl ammonium chloride) (PDDA Cl, Sigma Aldrich, 20 wt %i nH 2 O) were combined in H 2 Oataratio of 55:45 by mass at 0 8C. The solution was subjected to ultrasonication (Heilser,U P400S) over an ice bath, as one equivalent (to EDOT) of ammonium persulphate (NH 4 S 2 O 8 ,S igma Aldrich, 99.9 %) was added drop-wise over 1h.A fter 2h,aw hite precipitate was formed, which became ad eep-blue colour upon sonicating for af urther 7h.T he PEDOT/PDDA formulation was precipitated from the aqueous solution with the addition of excess LiNTf 2 (3 m Fluororad, 99 %) as ab lue precipitate, which was washed with H 2 Os everal times before being dried for 12 ha t4 58C in av acuum oven.…”

[33][34][35][36][37] Moreover, they have been used for their response to external stimuli. [38][39][40][41] Conversely, poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (pNIPAAm) is a well-known polymer that exhibits a thermoreversible phase transition at about 32 C. 42 This transition is called lower critical solution temperature (LCST): below LCST, pNIPAAm is water-soluble and hydrophilic while, when heated above LCST, it becomes hydrophobic and precipitates out from solution.…”
