Yakın zamanda yayınlanan bir makalede, rekürren tonsillit nedeniyle semptomları kontrol altına alınamayan, antibiyotik ve SSRI tedavisinden yarar görmeyen hastaya tonsillektomi uygulanmış, anksiyete ve tiklerin düzeldiği rapor edilmiştir 38 . Pediatric autoimmune neuropsychiatric disorders associated with streptococcal infections, refers to a disorder in children that manifest symptoms of obsessive-compulsive disorder and/or tic disorders associated with acute exacerbations. Although autoimmune responses following infections with streptococcus have been hypothesized to be responsible, there are still controversies about the pathophysiology and treatment. In this article, the treatment methods of pediatric autoimmune neuropsychiatric disorders associated with streptococcal infections and the role of otolaryngologist were discussed. Key words: PANDAS, treatment, tonsillectomy, obsessive-compulsive disorder ÖZET Streptokok enfeksiyonu ile ilişkili pediatrik otoimmün nöropsikiyatrik hastalıklar, akut alevlenmelerle seyreden ve etkilenen çocuklarda obsesif kompulsif bozukluklar ve/veya tiklerle seyreden bir hastalıktır. Streptokok enfeksiyonu sonrası oluşan otoimmün yanıtın hastalıktan sorumlu olduğu düşünülse de, patofizyoloji ve tedavi üzerindeki tartışmalar halen devam etmektedir. Bu makalede, streptokok enfeksiyonu ile ilişkili pediatrik otoimmün nöropsikiyatrik hastalıkların tedavisi ve tedavide kulak burun boğaz hekiminin yeri tartışılacaktır.

Acute-onset OCD and/or tics in children, known by the term Pediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Disorders Associated with Streptococcus (PANDAS), has been a focus of pediatric developmental and psychiatric research for nearly three decades. Studies have suggested that this condition results from molecular mimicry, in which anti-basal ganglia antibodies target brain proteins. While the pathogenesis of this condition is still widely debated, the clinical phenotype has shown consistent features and evidence that the dramatic symptoms cause substantial impairment in the child and in family functioning.
