Pauses Reflecting the Processing of Syntactic Units in Monolingual Text Production and Translation

Abstract: This study explores how the process of translating relates to other types of writing processes by comparing pause lengths preceding syntactic units (words, phrases and clauses) in two types of writing task, a monolingual text production and a translation. It also discusses the grounds for interpreting pause length as a refl ection of the cognitive demands of the writing process. The data was collected from 18 professional translators using the Translog keystroke logging software (Jakobsen/Schou 1999). Each sub… Show more

“…Immonen's third parameter, "the beginning of a cognitive unit", is crucial for segmentation research. This indicator has been among the most employed parameters of segmentation research (Dragsted, 2005;Dimitrova, 2006;Immonen & Mäkisalo, 2017), "where pauses are considered as boundaries of translation units or cognitive units, depending on how the segment is determined" Immonen and Mäkisalo (2017: 49).…”

“…Segmendid pakuksid kasulikku uurimismaterjali tõlke-abiprogrammide kontekstis, kus tekst on lauseteks või osalauseteks tükeldatud. Lisaks on leitud, et segmentide suurus on üks, mis eristab kirjutamist ja tõlkimist, näiteks esinevad tõlkimisel pikemad pausid lühemate üksuste (silbid, sõnad) ees ja kirjutamisel pikemate üksuste (laused, lõigud) ees (Immonen, Mäkisalo 2010).…”

“…Pauses as indicators of processing have been investigated for many years, e.g., by Goldman-Eisler (1972), Butterworth (1980), Baddeley (1986), Schilperoord (1996), Jakobsen (2003), Immonen and Mäkisalo (2010), and many more. Pauses have been viewed as important indicators of cognitive processes.…”
