Patient Satisfaction in Unilateral and Bilateral Breast Reconstruction [Outcomes Article]

Abstract: Patients undergoing unilateral reconstruction have the highest satisfaction with autologous reconstruction. As symmetry between reconstructed breasts is essential for patient satisfaction in bilateral reconstruction, it is important to use the same type of reconstruction, whether autologous or implant-based.

“…Autologous tissue breast reconstruction offers the greatest patient satisfaction 3 , so its use is gaining popularity worldwide 4 with the deep inferior epigastric perforator (DIEP) flap evolving as the ideal choice for autologous reconstruction in suitable women. Breast reconstruction with DIEP flap(s) is associated with lower risks of adverse outcomes 5 , favourable donor site morbidity [6][7][8][9] , improved quality of life 10 , shorter hospital stay 11,12 , reduced postoperative pain [13][14][15] and superior cosmetic results…”

“…When nipple-sparing mastectomy is chosen, subtle asymmetries can still occur, but are easily correctable at a staged revision surgery. In terms of patient satisfaction, patients who undergo autologous reconstruction have been shown to demonstrate higher satisfaction with unilateral reconstruction, suggesting that it may be more possible to achieve relative symmetry using autologous tissue [17]. Using 3D imaging, both TE-Implant and autologous reconstruction have been demonstrated to achieve symmetrical surgical results with the same number of operations.…”

“…8,9 In various contexts, microsurgical free flaps are associated with high patient satisfaction and favorable aesthetic outcomes. [10][11][12] The effect has been that practices offering free flap expertise have evolved into referral hubs for all types of breast therapy. 13 Characterizing these practices can help us understand the recent impact of changing patients' preferences for primary reconstruction and emerging strategies for revision reconstruction.…”
