Patient handling and musculoskeletal disorders among hospital workers: Analysis of 7 years of institutional workers' compensation claims data

Abstract: All the observed associations of risk factors disappeared and were further away from patient handling on the causal pathway to MSDs. Patient handling involves numerous work elements and dynamic physical activities. Understanding the work elements of patient handling and conducting interventions based on specific patient handling tasks can substantially reduce MSDs among hospital workers.

“…Each year, more than 10,000 nurses in the United States experience work-related musculoskeletal disorders resulting in lost work days and nurses rank among the top five occupations for musculoskeletal disorders (Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2010). Injuries from patient handling tasks account for 31-66% of all musculoskeletal injuries among healthcare workers (D'Arcy et al, 2012;Kim et al, 2012;Pompeii et al, 2009).…”

“…MMH tasks are common in various industries such as manufacturing, agriculture, hospital, and construction. Obviously, profit is the core for enterprises, so workers' capacities and productivity state are often overestimated [7][8][9][10][11][12][13]. Fredericks et al pointed out that MMH is one of the major causes of severe industrial injury [12].…”
