“…These results are consistent with the fact that past cercarial dermatitis is a risk factor for early and strong skin reaction after a new infection [3,5,22], while swim duration, period of the day when swimming, barometric pressure and maximal atmospheric temperature reflect the likelihood that cercariea will reach the bather's skin. The probability of contact of cercariae with the skin increases with the amount of time spent in the water [23].…”

Exaggerated anticipatory anxiety is common in social anxiety disorder (SAD). Neuroimaging studies have revealed altered neural activity in response to social stimuli in SAD, but fewer studies have examined neural activity during anticipation of feared social stimuli in SAD. The current study examined the time course and magnitude of activity in threat processing brain regions during speech anticipation in socially anxious individuals and healthy controls (HC). Method Participants (SAD n = 58; HC n = 16) underwent functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) during which they completed a 90s control anticipation task and 90s speech anticipation task.

“…During the first 30 h after exposure, an extensive infiltration of neutrophils and lymphocytes occurs which by day 2 is augmented by the influx of eosinophils. The infiltrating cells kill the penetrated cercariae (50). The symptomatology and histologic picture are consistent with an anamnestic immune reaction (210).…”

“…In addition to the facts already mentioned, other reasons justifying publication of this case are: the ectopic location in the sacral region, not described previously; the phenomenon of egg extrusion through tunnels in the superficial dermis layer and among epidermis cells with no eosinophilic reaction, which suggests inverse tunnels built from the outside to the inside by cercariae penetrating the human skin [ 5 , 26 ] - this seems to be novel; several S. mansoni eggs were observed , many of them calcified, but few induced a granulomatous reaction in their immediate neighborhood. This contrasts with most cases published, in which few eggs and few granulomas were found, several in the initial phase of evolution, i.e.…”
