1 -In many hub traction power supply systems (TPSS), the 27.5kV-busbars in the traction substation (TSS) have supplied several railway lines in a local area for reducing the number of TSSs. However, the multiple railway lines connected to the busbar may affect the resonance behaviors of the entire system. It's therefore needed to investigate the resonance behaviors under such hub TPSS conditions since the harmonic current collection of all railway lines will aggravate the resonance problem. Thus, resonance mode assessment and its sensitivity method is adopted for investigating the resonance behaviors of hub TPSS affected by different numbers of connected lines, lengths of supply lines, system capacities, etc. The numerical results of modal sensitivity indices are compared to investigate and quantify the harmonic resonance issue caused by multiple electrical railway lines. In addition, resonance frequency-shift technique and using modal impedance sensitivity index based method are also employed to mitigate the critical harmonic resonances. The results illustrate that it is effective to analyze resonance issues by adopting the harmonic model and modal methods in this paper. The two types of resonance behaviors (i.e. primary resonance and resonance band) caused from the hub TPSS have been fully investigated, and the resulted harmonic distortion of hub TPSS is suppressed.

A novel hybrid carrier-based pulse width modulation (CBPWM) scheme that combines unipolar and dipolar modulations is proposed for single-phase three-level rectifiers, which are widely applied in railway traction drive systems. The proposed CBPWM method can satisfy the volt-second balancing principle in the complete modulation index region through overmodulation compensation. The modulation scheme features two modulation modes: unipolar and dipolar. The operation range limits of these modulation modes can be modified by changing the separation coefficient. In comparison with the traditional unipolar CBPWM, the proposed hybrid CBPWM scheme can provide advantageous features, such as lower high-order harmonic distortion of the line current and better utilization of switching frequency. The separation coefficient value is optimized to achieve the maximum utilization of these advantages. The experimental results verify the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed hybrid CBPWM scheme.

Abstract:The advanced traction power supply system (ATPSS) is a new directional development for traction power supply systems, which can totally remove the neutral sections and effectively promote power quality. However, the existing converters suffer from small substation capacity. In this paper, a new configuration based on a three-level neutral point clamped (3L-NPC) three-phase to single-phase cascade converter in a substation is proposed for ATPSS, which can be used to match the capacity of the converter for high voltage and large power applications. The control strategy of the proposed converter is analyzed in depth, and the phase disposition sinusoidal pulse width modulation (PD-SPWM) with phase shift carrier SPWM (PSC-SPWM) is employed in the inverters. Then, the inductance equalizing circuit is applied for the voltage balance on the DC-link. Besides, a LC filter circuit is designed to eliminate the double line-frequency ripple of DC voltage. Afterwards, a simulation model and an experimental prototype are developed, respectively. The simulation results show that the proposed converter in this paper can not only meet the requirements of voltage and capacity for the traction network, but also improve power quality.
