Participation in water-exercising long-term after breast cancer surgery: Experiences of significant factors for continuing exercising as a part of cancer rehabilitation

Abstract: Although physical exercising has great benefits, little is known regarding factors of significance for cancer survivors to continue exercising within their rehabilitation. The objective was to describe factors experienced to be of significance for cancer survivors to continue with water-exercising long-term after breast cancer surgery. “…Use of complex decongestive therapy with moderate intensity exercise resulted in significant differences in muscular strength, arm movement, and quality of life, without any increased risk for lymphedema . Complex decongestive therapy is provided by a certified lymphedema specialist and includes manual lymph drainage by gentle massage, compression via garment or compression bandages, exercises to enhance lymphatic pumping, and careful skin care . It can also be adapted to home programs, demonstrating benefits including reduction in pain levels …”

“…Exercise is one of the best studied interventions, and a regular exercise program has been demonstrated to improve mood, fatigue, lymphedema, range of motion, strength, and quality of life while preventing osteoporosis and improving survival rates. 3,[59][60][61][62] The American Cancer Society recommendations include avoiding inactivity, return to activities of daily living as soon as possible, and at least 150 minutes of moderate exercise or 75 minutes of vigorous exercise per week. 17 A Cochrane Review of physical therapy treatments and exercise supported that any amount of exercise or rehabilitation interventions significantly reduced arm and shoulder morbidity, regardless of the method of breast cancer treatment.…”
