Participation and interest in support services among family caregivers of older adults with cancer

Abstract: A large proportion of family caregivers, including those experiencing depression and anxiety symptoms and who were underprepared, are not using formal support services but have a strong interest in services. Strategies to increase service use may include targeting distressed caregivers early in their caregiving experience.

“…The importance of considering the needs of caregivers as well as patients is recognised for the provision of good care [ 28 , 29 ].The use of PROs for caregivers alongside those for patients might facilitate discussions about potential treatments and supportive interventions needed for both. There has been an increase in the development of services for caregivers, [ 30 , 31 ] now there is need for robust measures to quantify the effectiveness of any such intervention. The CRRS and its subscale scores may provide useful indications as to how different domains are impacted for different individuals, allowing for a more tailored approach to supportive interventions [ 32 ].…”

Family caregivers often have unmet needs and report strong interest in receiving more support (Collins et al, 2017, Dionne-Odom et al, 2017, McIlfatrick et al, 2017. In clinical care, the use of a personcentered approach and a short and direct but still comprehensive tool can facilitate the work of assessing family caregiver needs and ensuring adequate support (Ewing et al, 2013a, Ewing et al, 2013b.…”

“…Despite the recruitment of caregivers at the time of heightened stress before HCT, BMT‐CARE was feasible with high enrollment and retention rates. These findings are particularly relevant because of the challenges in recruiting caregivers for supportive care interventions, especially with the competing demands on caregivers' time . Importantly, approximately half of the BMT‐CARE intervention sessions took place over the telephone or via video conferencing, which allows for a more scalable and potentially disseminable intervention delivery model .…”
