The Relationship between Emo Subcultural Participation and Values of Chinese College Students

Existing research has explored characteristics of emo subculture and its impact on youth development. However, there is little discussion has been had on the relationship between emo subcultural participation and values identification. This study investigated emo subcultural participation with a sample of 500 college students from two universities in Shanghai, China. Participants completed the Emo Subcultural Questionnaire, Participation Questionnaire, the Schwartz' Portrait Values Questionnaire and the Chinese Values Questionnaire to explore the relationship between emo subcultural participation and students' values. Multi-level linear regression analysis was conducted to explore the relationship between emo subcultural participation and values. The results showed that the higher the score of emo subcultural perception, the more likely the Chinese college students were to agree with values of tradition, collective responsibility, and family wellbeing, and the less likely they were to agree with values of self-direction, power, stimulation and hedonism. The higher the score of emo subcultural communication, the more participants agreed with the values of self-direction, universalism, conformity, collective responsibility, rule-abiding and self-improvement, and the less likely they were to agree with the values of power and fashion. Participation in emo subculture predicted both identification with and resistance to particular values, i.e., participants attempted to return to traditional values through emo subculture as a form of resistance to modern values, while reflecting the contradiction between collective and individual values in subcultural participation.

This study primarily aims to identify the factors that helped emo kids in 2010 move through the emo-identity discrimination and be able to obtain a certain level of achievement. Facebook is the social network that allows users to track friends' posts back over 10 years. Content analysis was conducted by using two coders to rate 1,432 Facebook posts published during 2010 until 2019, based on the variables: (1) emo-related content, (2) emotion expression, (3) being a part of fandom, (4) the group of fandom, (5) friend(s) and (6) family appearance. The results from logistic regression analysis reveal that past emo kids' Facebook posts are increasing in the contents about friends, family, and fan objects over time. However, the number of posts with emo music or emo fan object was reduced. Having social support and belonging to social group, like fandom, might help past emo kids overcome the hard time that they had got prejudiced. Future studies should develop a model or existing theory to explain the complexity of individuals' overlapping identities blended in social networking profiles.

Cel pracyCelem badań było określenie zróżnicowania w zakresie samooceny i perfekcjonizmu w grupach kobiet wyróżnionych w oparciu o kryterium jakości retrospektywnej oceny postaw rodzicielskich ojców. Poszukiwano także wartości predykcyjnej retrospektywnie ujętych postaw rodzicielskich ojców dla perfekcjonizmu i samooceny kobiet w okresie wczesnej dorosłości oraz związków samooceny z rodzajami perfekcjonizmu.MetodaW badaniach uczestniczyło 87 kobiet w okresie wczesnej dorosłości (M=21,64, SD=4,84), pochodzących z województwa łódzkiego. Zastosowano następujące narzędzia badawcze: Kwestionariusz Retrospektywnej Oceny Postaw Rodziców, Kwestionariusz Perfekcjonizmu Adaptacyjnego i Dezadaptacyjnego, Wielowymiarowy Kwestionariusz Samooceny.WynikiUzyskane rezultaty badań wskazują na występowanie zróżnicowania w zakresie samooceny i perfekcjonizmu kobiet w zależności od retrospektywnej oceny postaw rodzicielskich ojców. Kobiety negatywnie oceniające postawy rodzicielskie ojców uzyskały wyższe wyniki średnie w zakresie perfekcjonizmu dezadaptacyjnego oraz niższe w zakresie samooceny ogólnej i jej wymiarów (tj. bycie kochanym, samokontrola, obronne wzmacnianie samooceny, samoakceptacja, popularność, integracja tożsamości) niż kobiety określające postawy rodzicielskie ojców jako pozytywne. Stwierdzono, że retrospektywna ocena postaw rodzicielskich ojców, rozpatrywana zarówno w aspekcie pozytywnym jak i negatywnym miała wartość predykcyjną, w kierunku zgodnym z oczekiwaniami dla perfekcjonizmu dezadaptacyjnego oraz samooceny ogólnej i jej wymiarów. Wykazano występowanie istotnych związków między rodzajami perfekcjonizmu oraz samooceną ogólną.WnioskiWskazanie na rolę retrospektywnej oceny postaw rodzicielskich ojców w kształtowaniu samooceny i perfekcjonizmu młodych kobiet przyczynia się zarówno do zaktualizowania wiedzy psychologicznej z tego zakresu, jak i ma istotne znaczenie w psychoterapii.
