Cowpea is a legume that is grown worldwide and used for different purposes, especially as green grains. However, considering the low availability of cowpea cultivars for green grain production, selecting genotypes that have better traits for this purpose is necessary. In this context, the objective of this study was to estimate genetic parameters and evaluate different selection indices for identifying superior cowpea genotypes and subsidizing cowpea breeding programs focused on green grain production. A field experiment was conducted at the Center of Agricultural Sciences of the Federal University of Ceará (UFC), Ceará, Brazil. The treatments consisted of 42 cowpea genotypes from the Active Germplasm Bank of the UFC. Fourteen traits were used for characterization. The experiment was conducted in an augmented block design with four controls. The data obtained were subjected to analysis of variance, and genetic parameters, correlations, and selection indices were determined. The traits days to flowering (DFL), days to fruiting (DFR), green pod weight (GPW), green pod width (GW), green pod length (GPL), green pod thickness (GPT), number of grains per pod (NGP), and green grain thickness (GGT) showed heritability higher than 70%, indicating that selection in an early generation is favorable. The genetic correlations between the trait pairs DFL×DFR, GPW×GPL, and GW×GGT were higher than the phenotypic and environmental correlations. Genotypes CE-228, CE-688, CE-994, CE-165, CE-796, and BRS-Paraguaçu showed simultaneous superiority for the evaluated traits and are the most appropriate for green grain production.

The objective was to evaluate the epicotyl length of seedlings of soybean cultivars in the field, submitted to plant densification by reducing the inter-row spacing. Two field experiments were conducted in Rio Paranaíba in the state of Minas Gerais and the effect of reduced spacing (20 cm, 30 cm, 40 cm and 50 cm between rows) was evaluated. The assessment of the epicotyl length was done by using a millimeter ruler when the plants reached the V2 development stage. The experiments were conducted in a randomized block design with four repetitions. In experiment 1, the BRSMG752S cultivar was submitted to four inter-row spacings and no differences were found among them. In experiment 2, the simple factorial scheme 4 x 3 was considered, with 4 spacings and 3 cultivars, to analyze the effect of the interaction between cultivars (96R10, 97R50 and 98Y21) and spacing (20, 30, 40 and 50 cm between rows). The results of experiment 2 indicated that there was no significant effect for spacing and that the cultivars presented statistically different averages. Thus, it can be concluded that the epicotyl length of soybean seedlings, grown in the field in Rio Paranaíba in the state of Minas Gerais and evaluated at the V2 stage of development, was not influenced by the distance between the sowing lines and that the cultivar 96R10 showed the highest and 98Y21 the lowest mean epicotyl length of soybean seedlings, grown in the field in Rio Paranaíba in the state of Minas Gerais and evaluated at the V2 stage of development.

Uma das alternativas viáveis para aumentar a produtividade das culturas agrícolas é o uso de bioestimulantes. Os efeitos desses produtos em cultivos de soja são relatados, contudo, o conhecimento da ação dos bioestimulantes a base de extrato de algas marinhas nesta cultura ainda é incipiente. O objetivo desse estudo foi avaliar caracteres biométricos de uma cultivar de soja em função de números de aplicações de um bioestimulante à base de extratos de algas marinhas. O experimento foi realizado em uma fazenda em Xapuri, Acre, em delineamento de blocos casualizados, com três tratamentos: duas (T1) e três (T2) aplicações foliares de ExpertGrow® e testemunha (T3 – zero aplicação); e três repetições. Foram avaliados altura da planta, diâmetro do caule, número de ramificações, número de vagens e massa de 100 grãos. Realizou-se análise de variância, comparação de médias, correlações de Pearson, componentes principais (PCA) e agrupamento UPGMA. Três aplicações de bioestimulante resultou em plantas mais altas. Os maiores valores para diâmetro do caule, número de ramificações, número de vagens e massa de 100 grãos foram verificados com duas aplicações. A exceção da altura da planta, todos os pares de variáveis tiveram correlações altas e positivas. A PCA mostrou total distinção entre os tratamentos e o dendrograma indicou a formação de dois grupos, sendo um formado apenas pelo tratamento de duas aplicações. Duas aplicações de ExpertGrow® em plantas de soja é indicada, pois resulta em caules mais grossos, maior quantidade de ramificações e de vagens e grãos mais pesados.
