Setting Time and Strength Monitoring of Alkali-Activated Cement Mixtures by Ultrasonic Testing

Alkali-activated cement (AAC) is a promising binder that replaces ordinary Portland cement (OPC). In this study, the development of setting time and strength of AAC mixes were studied using ultrasonic testing method. The test results were compared with traditional Vicat setting time and compressive and flexural strengths. The findings showed that setting times and strengths have a strong correlation with ultrasonic velocity curve. The initial setting time corresponds well with the ultrasonic velocity curve’s dormant period, and the final setting time with the time it takes to reach the velocity curve’s maximum acceleration. Both setting times also showed a correlation with the value of the maximum acceleration. An exponential relation was found between the ultrasonic velocity and the compressive and flexural strengths. The effect of binder content, alkaline solid to binder ratio (AS/B), sodium silicate to sodium hydroxide solids ratio (SS/SH), and total water to total solid binder ratio (TW/TS) on the strength and setting time are also studied using Taguchi method of experimental design. AS/B ratio showed a significant influence on the setting time of AAC while TW/TS ratio showed only a minor effect. The ultrasonic velocities were able to capture the effect of the different parameters similar to the compressive strength. The velocity decreased mainly with the increase of TW/TS ratio and binder content, while AS/B and SS/SH ratios showed a lower influence.

Significant issue in reinforced concrete (RC) structures is corrosion of steel. High alkalization of cement matrix, low permeability, and sufficient cover plays an important role to shield from corrosion of steel. There is a replacement material for steel is fiber‐reinforced polymer (FRP) bars as reinforcement. The FRP bars are nonconductive and durable material and they are composited from fibers and polymers matrix. In this study, new technology geopolymer concrete (GC) was used along with glass fiber‐reinforced polymer (GFRP) and basalt fiber‐reinforced polymer (BFRP) bars. GC is produced from industrial by‐product materials such as fly ash and ground granulated blast furnace slag (rich in silica and alumina) and treated as sustainable material. The long term durability of many RC structures affects drastically by the reinforcement corrosion. Main aspect of bond behavior is tension stiffening as it has capability to control the reinforcement to shift the tensile stresses to concrete. This paper evaluates the bond strength between the GC reinforced with GFRP/BFRP and the results were evaluated with conventional concrete (CC) reinforced with steel. The pullout test method was used to determine the bond between FRP and steel bars with the surrounding concrete based on IS: 2770 (part I)‐1967. The comparison of bond strength GC with FRP almost same as CC with steel. The tension test and double shear test were also carried out in FRP and steel bars based on IS 432–1982 and 5242–1979, respectively.

The use of sodium carbonate as an alkali activator for slag to produce alkali-activated slag is promising due to its sustainable, economic and user-friendly properties. However, the lower early age performance of composites made with such binder has limited its use especially in applications where higher early age is required. Hence, in order to propel the application of this sustainable binder, it is imperative to find ways in which the early age performance can be enhanced without having a detrimental effect on later age performance. One of the effective and sustainable ways to enhance the early age strength of sodium carbonate activated slag is by incorporation of various additives as partial replacement of sodium carbonate on/and slag. In order to propel more application of sodium carbonate slag for various applications, this current study was undertaken. In this paper, an overview of the types of various additives that can be used to enhance the early age compressive strength of sodium carbonate activated slag composites was discussed. The mechanism and dosage of each of the additives were briefly discussed alongside the limitation and advantages of the additives. Findings from this overview showed that the early age compressive strength of sodium carbonate activated slag can be enhanced with the use of additives such as calcium oxide, calcium hydroxide, Portland cement, sodium hydroxide and sodium silicate.
