Abstract: Wavy channels were investigated in this paper as a passive scheme to improve the heat transfer performance of laminar fluid flow as applied to microchannel heat sinks. Parametric study of three-dimensional laminar fluid flow and heat transfer characteristics in microsized wavy channels was performed by varying the wavy feature amplitude, wavelength, and aspect ratio for different Reynolds numbers between 50 and 150. Two different types of wavy channels were considered and their thermal performance for a consta… Show more

“…T in and T out were the temperatures measured by the thermocouples positioned just before and after the heat sink. The density and the specific heat of the fluid were determined from Rogers and Mayhew's steam tables [33], using the mean temperature of the fluid across the heat sink.…”

“…6(a) and (b). Besides these two effects, the wavy channel changes the direction of main flows, inducing the jet-like impingement flow to disturb the thermal and the flow boundary layer [16][17][18][19][20]40], and hence, enhances the heat transfer performance. For the wavy microchannel heat sinks with porous fins, the jet-like impingement flow is further enhanced by forcing the cold coolant to permeate into the porous fins.…”

“…high thermal conductivity solid materials [7] or nanofluids [8,9]; or novel designs, e.g., inserting solid ribs, porous blocks or baffles into the channel [10][11][12][13][14][15], or using wavy channels [16][17][18][19][20]. Among these designs, the outcome of lower thermal resistance usually accompanies with the penalty of high pressure drop, which is still an obstacle to the practical applications.…”
