Self-deploying structures seek to provide a compact launch package for large, lightweight satellite booms. One self-deploying method is a foldable tape spring. This paper examines the large scale behavior of a boom attached by a tape spring hinge during mock deployments. A boom attached by tape spring to a rigid stand was released and the boom bounced up to 60° before coming to rest (as opposed to snap-through behavior). These large amplitude bounces can cause the boom to collide with sensors, other booms or arrays causing damage or preventing full deployment. Results show the first bounce of deployment is nearly bounded by a four parameter ellipse. The ellipses of similar folds are similar also, suggesting that a model can be developed. Free-fall tests simulating the free-free condition found in microgravity also show similar elliptical motion. Envelopes that bound the extents of the boom motion allow for collisions to be prevented by adjustment of the design.

A Precise Connection Method for Surface Shape Data Measured by the Grating Projection Method

A highly precise connection method for two sets of three-dimensional surface shape data measured by the grating projection method is proposed with the aim of capturing the full-field surface shape of a large space structures with high accuracy and spatial resolution. The coordinate transformation matrix that serves as an interface between the two sets of surface shape data is precisely calculated by feature-point matching of the virtual targets using the singular value decomposition algorithm, and the two sets of the surface shape data are connected by the coordinate transformation. In the verification experiment, the virtual targets are created from preliminary surface shape measurement of dedicated concave models using the grating projection method. The results show that the two sets of surface shape data can be connected with 40.2 © 10 ¹6 mRMS accuracy. This connection accuracy is roughly the same as that achieved with photogrammetry using the grating projection method, thus confirming the effectiveness of the connection method proposed.

The structural design and flight stability characteristics of micro air vehicles have received much attention due to its low Reynolds number. Compared with fixed-wing aircraft, hovering ducted-fan micro air vehicles with vertical takeoff and landing and hovering capabilities have promising prospect. In this article, a flexible membrane and inflatable structure has been used as the aerodynamic shape of an aircraft model. Its advantages have been analyzed and verified by fluidstructure interaction based on finite element method. The flight stability of hovering micro air vehicles has also been investigated based on the theory of motion of structure. In order to improve the flight stability of the designed hovering micro air vehicle model, the effects of geometrical parameters and materials have been analyzed through an orthogonal experimental design. Based on the optimized results, the aircraft prototype has been manufactured for experimental test. The elastic deformation produced on its flexible membrane structure is obtained by stroboscopic stereo imaging method and a purpose-built experimental environment. The numerical simulation results indicated that the thickness of membrane and material of vertical duct have significant effects on the micro air vehicle flight stability and disturbance resistance ability. The results have confirmed that the flexible aerodynamic mechanisms produced by the aeroelastic deformation of spherical membrane can enhance the micro air vehicle stability.
