The Palaeogene was a time of important climatic and palaeoceanographic changes. To understand these modifications in the Southern Hemisphere, and especially those related to the opening of the Drake Passage (DP), is essential to correlate the lithostratigraphic units of Eocene age in areas adjacent to this passage, such as those from the Austral-Magallanes Basin (to the north of the DP) and James Ross Basin (to the south of the DP). For many years, there was no correlation between these units due to the absence of reliable chronostratigraphic and biostratigraphic information. Recently, other authors published new detrital zircon U/Pb data for the Austral-Magallanes Basin and introduced important modifications to the previous stratigraphic scheme. Subsequently, due to the reinterpretation of the new available isotope data together with additional U/Pb ages from Chilean sections, the recent chronostratigraphic model was modified again, including not only the Austral-Magallanes Basin units but also those from the James Ross Basin. In the light of an updated quantitative dinoflagellate cyst dataset from southern South America and northern Antarctic Peninsula we performed a compositional Principal Component Analysis to evaluate and discuss the different age models proposed for the studied sections. We also compare our results with other assemblages from southern Chilean sections, Malvinas (Falkland) Plateau, and the South Orkney sites. We conclude that this analysis comparing different Eocene units from areas adjacent to the DP shows a high correlation between the dinoflagellate cyst assemblages considered to be Bartonian in age in the last proposed stratigraphic scheme.

BIOSTRATIGRAPHIC AND PALEOENVIRONMENTAL STUDY OF RÍO TURBIO FORMATION (MIDDLE-UPPER EOCENE) IN SOUTHWEST OF PATAGONIA (ARGENTINA) BASED ON DINOFLAGELLATE CYSTS. During the middle and late Eocene the Austral Basin, in southern Patagonia (Argentina), was fl ooded by an AtlanticOcean transgression, which was responsible for the deposition of the upper member of the Río Turbio Formation. We have analyzed the dinofl agellate cyst assemblages from this stratigraphic section in order to provide a biostratigraphic framework and reconstruct the paleogeographic and paleoceanographic conditions in this area. Dinofl agellate cyst events recorded were compared and interpreted based taking into account other records recognized for the South Pacifi c Ocean. The comparison allowed us to suggest an age between 45.5 Ma (mid-Lutetian) and 33.5 Ma (Priabonian) for the upper member of the Rio Turbio Formation. We recognized three zones of dinofl agellate cysts. Zone I presents an alternating dominance between Enneadocysta dictyostila, Defl andrea antarctica and Vozzhennikovia apertura indicating two sea level rises. Zone II is dominated by V. apertura suggesting high trophic levels and cool waters in a shallow-marine coastal environment. The lower part of the Zone III shows a high abundance of Turbiosphaera fi losa with different morphotypes, which may correspond to physicochemical changes in the water column. The uppermost part of the Zone III is characterized by Protoperidinaceae and typical forms of T. fi losa suggesting an oceanic environment infl uenced by upwelling processes. Zones I and II are defi ned by the dominance of middle Eocene endemic-Antarctic assemblage, while Zone III shows a signifi cant replacement of these taxa by cosmopolitan species. This turnover seems to be forced by the deepening of the Southern Atlantic Ocean gateways and the changes in the ocean circulation patterns.

Oysters are ecosystem engineering species building reef‐like biogenic structures in temperate shallow water environments, serving as biodiversity hotspots. Recently, also their ecosystem services such as fish nursery, pollutants sink and self‐sustaining coastal protection mechanisms came into a research focus. In light of accelerated sea level rise and increasing environmental dynamics, a determination of vertical growth rates of these biosedimentary structures is paramount in assessing their resilience. This study embarked on a comprehensive survey of seasonal vertical reef growth rates using terrestrial laser scanning and related population dynamics of two intertidal reefs built by the non‐native oyster Magallana gigas in the Wadden Sea. We quantified median reef growth at 19.8 mm yr−1 for the Kaiserbalje reef and 17.5 mm yr−1 for the Nordland reef. Additionally, we tested the hypothesis that the seasonal variations in reef growth rates correspond to the local population dynamics, mainly the parameters of shell length and abundance which mirror delayed effects from previous spawning events. Shell growth rates were 0.03–0.06 mm d−1 in winter and 0.10–0.16 mm d−1 in summer, mean oyster abundance from autumn 2019 to spring 2022 was 627 ± 43 ind. m−2 and 338 ± 87 ind. m−2 at the Kaiserbalje and Nordland reefs respectively. Minor reef growth in the topmost reef area reflects an emerging equilibrium of the vertical reef position to actual sea level. Our findings are in accordance with growth of natural Crassostrea virginica reefs on the US East Coast, indicating potential resilience to actual and predicted sea level rise scenarios. Moreover, understanding local hydro‐morphodynamic feedback linked to sea level rise will be vital in predicting the three‐dimensional stability of these biosedimentary structures and habitats.
