Hazelnut skin is a rich source of polyphenols but is generally discarded during the roasting process of hazelnuts. Previous studies reported the extraction and identification of these compounds using different solvents and procedures; however, there are few reports on their enrichment and purification. In this study, three types of Amber-lite macroporous resins (XAD 16, XAD 4, and XAD 7) were compared to evaluate the enrichment of polyphenols via adsorption and desorption mechanisms. The operating condition parameters for polyphenol adsorption/desorption of each resin were determined, the kinetics of adsorption were examined, and a method for polyphenol recovery was developed using static and dynamic adsorption/desorption. Antioxidant activity and high-performance liquid chromatography-diode array detection were used to confirm the increase in polyphenol obtained using the adsorption/desorption technique. XAD16 showed the highest adsorption capacity, with a recovery of 87.7%, and the adsorption kinetics fit well with a pseudo-second-order model. The highest poly-phenol desorption ratio was observed using an ethanol/water solution (70% v/v) at a flow rate of 1.5 bed volume/h.

With the depletion of fossil fuel feedstocks, the lignocellulosic biomass, including the agro-wastes, can serve as the best alternative source to produce activated carbons (ACs). Corn biomass (corn leaves, stalks, cobs without kernels, silk, and kernels) were used to produce ACs in a two-step process. Crushed plant material was carbonized at 600 °C and then the obtained carbon was activated using potassium hydroxide at 750 °C. The content and type of surface oxygen functional groups were determined by the Boehm method and infrared spectroscopy. The porous structure of the obtained AC was determined by the nitrogen adsorption/desorption method at -196 °C, and the thermal resistance by the thermogravimetric method. The iodine number was also determined. The ACs derived from corn biomass were characterized with surfaces rich in chemical groups and revealed a highly developed porous structure. The specific BET surface area ranged from 1600 m2/g to 1965 m2/g. High values of iodine number approx. 1300 mg/g, indicated an extensive system of pores and their good adsorption properties.

In this work, an alternative utilization of agro-industrial waste coconut endocarp (Cocos nucifera L.) as raw material for the synthesis of magnetic adsorbent aiming the phenol removal is proposed. The synthetized adsorbent, denominated magnetic activated carbon (MAC), was prepared by coprecipitation of cobalt ferrite (CoFe 2 O 4 ) onto activated carbon surface obtained by carbonization of coconut endocarp. Characterization of MAC was carried out by point of zero charge (PZC), Brunauer, Emmett, and Teller (BET) surface area, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), x-ray fluorescence (XRF), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), x-ray diffractometry (XRD) analysis, and magnetization curves. Adsorption experiments were performed in batch system to evaluate kinetics and equilibrium of phenol adsorption. Adsorbent regeneration method was proposed to evaluate the reutilization of MAC in successive cycles of adsorption-desorption. Resultsshowed that obtained magnetic compounds present cubic phase structure covered in activated carbon surface. MAC has microporous structure with functional groups like carbonyl and hydroxyl that can behave as adsorption sites.Kinetic studies indicate that adsorption rate increased rapidly around the initial 60 min, reaching equilibrium at 240 min; following pseudo-first-order and pseudo-second-order kinetic models in characterization concentrations of 50 and 100 mg L À1 , only the second-order model fit the kinetic data at 150 mg L À1 , while both models were outside the chi-square interval at 200 and 230 mg L À1 . The adsorption equilibrium is represented by Langmuir isotherm with high adsorption capacity of 116.0 ± 3.61 mg g À1 . The desorption experiments revealed that adsorption capacities of MAC still viable after three adsorption-desorption cycles. It was observed that chemical affinity of small concentrations of methanol with phenol allowed to exert greater desorption capacity to other solvents with permanence of adsorbed phenol of 17.5 mg g À1 .
