Ozonized oils: a qualitative and quantitative analysis

Abstract: Most of the problems of endodontic origin have a bacterial etiological agent. Thus, there is a continued interest in seeking more effective chemical substances that can replace the camphorated paramonochiorophenol or antibiotics as intracanal medicaments. Among the possible substances, ozone has some interesting biological characteristics: bactericidal action, debriding effect, angiogenesis stimulation capacity and high oxidizing power. The purpose of this study was to chemically evaluate the presence of ozone… Show more

“…A recent study has claimed that ozone dissolved in oil can be used as an intracanal medicament . However, questions regarding the effect of surface tension on the flow characteristics of ozonized oil, chemical stability of ozonized oil, and the interaction of ozonized oil with root dentin and obturating material must be answered before it can be applied in Endodontics . A systematic review by Azarpazhooh & Limeback highlighted good evidence of ozone biocompatibility with human oral epithelial cells, gingival fibroblast, and periodontal cells.…”

“…While the half-life of ozone in gaseous form is ephemeral, its oil form allows storage for several months, avoiding the need of a generator (18). The mechanism of action of ozonized oils is related to their byproducts, the triozonides, which generate hydrogen peroxide and other compounds.…”

“…The propylene glycol vehicle (Labsynth, Diadema, SP, Brazil) was ozonized in 5 mL tubes submitted to ozone gas bubbles for 60 min, using an ozone generator (C-20 Model; Ozonic, São Bernado do Campo, SP, Brazil), as proposed by Guinesi et al (18). The ozonized product was disposed into empty anesthetic cartridges and taken to the root canals by a Carpule syringe and 27G needles.…”

“…A recent study has claimed that ozone dissolved in oil can be used as an intracanal medicament (98). Studies on the effect of surface tension on the flow characteristics of ozonized oil, chemical stability of ozonized oil, and their interaction with root dentin and obturating material is justified before ozone can be applied in endodontics (99). The reduced effectiveness of ozone against sessile bacteria when compared to planktonic bacteria is because of the characteristics of biofilm (96).…”
