“…Values of O 2 consumption at I SOC were low and well within the range expected for small intertidal fish (Subrahmanyam 1980, Laming et al 1982 indicating that the animals were not severely stressed. Increasing the temperature by 10°C caused stress at first, as was shown by the large increase in O 2 consumption even though the fish did not become active (apart from changes in ventilation).…”

“…In the York River, Leiostomus xanthurus were absent when oxygen concentration dropped below 2 mg 1-1, which is their lower limit of oxygen tolerance in St. Marks, Florida, USA (Subrahanyam 1980). After the first hypoxic event L. xanthurus left the deepest stratum and occurred later at highest densities in Strata B and C. L. xanthurus died within 4 h when experimental oxygen concentrations were reduced to < 1.4 mg 1-1 (20% saturation).…”

“…Reports of oxyconformity in fishes have existed for decades, and they have sparked enthusiastic discussions (Svendsen et al, 2019;Ultsch et al, 1981;Ultsch & Regan, 2019). Almost invariably, species that were once thought to be oxyconformers have proven to be oxyregulators upon deeper examination (Subrahmanyam, 1980;Ultsch & Regan, 2019;Virani & Rees, 2000). The reasons for the inconsistencies are likely to be diverse, but in most cases methodological artefacts rather than biological phenomena are likely to be responsible.…”
