Oxidative Stress in Adult Dengue Patients

Abstract: An association between viral diseases and increased oxidative stress has been suggested. The time course of serum levels of total antioxidant status (TAS), peroxidation potential (PP), glutathione (GSH), lipid peroxidation measured as hydroperoxides, and malondyaldehyde and 4-hydroxyalkenals (MDA + 4-HDA), as well as antioxidant enzymatic activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione peroxidase (GPx), were measured in 22 serologically confirmed dengue patients. Most of the patients had dengue fever an… Show more

“…[2] The pathogenesis of thrombocytopenia in dengue fever is not clear but increased oxidative stress may have a role. [3,4] Vitamin E which has antioxidant and free-radical scavenging properties and may therefore help in these cases. [5,6] Hence, in the present study, we have evaluated the effect of vitamin E on thrombocytopenia in the cases of dengue fever.…”

“…GSH, catalase (CAT), thioredoxin (Trx) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) produce the environment in the cell that acts against the oxidants and keep the reducing environment in the cell [5] . OS due to effect of dengue infection on protein-bound sulphydryls in human plasma is not well understood [6] . In dengue patients, increased levels of total antioxidant status (TAS) like SOD, GSH, and LPO have been observed, and decreased levels of glutathione peroxidase (GPx) and total hydroperoxides (THP) have been observed as compared to normal [7] .…”

“…It is based on a recent investigation compared HO-1 production by monocytes in vivo in various acute inflammatory illnesses and in healthy controls. Significantly elevated HO-1 mRNA levels seen in acute inflammatory illnesses suggest that monocyte production of HO-1 serves as a potent anti-inflammatory agent in controlling excessive cell or tissue injury in the presence of oxidative stress and cytokinemia [19]. 4) Dengue virus infection could interfere the intracellular iron metabolism; this may trigger the Fenton reaction, thus producing hydroxyl radicals, which are highly toxic to cells.…”
