Abstract: Normal term and spontaneous preterm births (PTB) are documented to be associated with oxidative stress (OS), and imbalances in the redox system (balance between pro- and antioxidant) have been reported in the maternal–fetal intrauterine compartments. The exact mechanism of labor initiation either at term or preterm by OS is still unclear, and this lack of understanding can partially be blamed for failure of antioxidant supplementation trials in PTB prevention. Based on recent findings from our laboratory, we p… Show more

“…The consequent tissue damage is manifested in a range of pathologies to different organ systems (Domingueti et al 2015;Aluganti et al 2016;Hernández et al 2016). Recently, insufficiently regulated ROS has been recognized as a major contributor to disorders of pregnancy (Coppe et al 2010;Redman and Sargent 2010;Menon 2014; Wu et al 2015a, b;Zhang et al 2015).…”

“…Concomitantly, withdraw of autophagy induces decidual senescence that leads to membrane weakening and production of the senescence-associated secretory phenotype (SASP), further inducing labor PEC and IUGR, the administration of antioxidants to alleviate these conditions is controversial and reports regarding the positive effects of such intake are inconclusive (Basaran et al 2010;Thorne-Lyman and Fawzi 2012). While the balance between ROS and antioxidants is essential for cell homeostasis, it is important to consider that oxidative stress seems to be a consequence and not a primary cause of PEC and IUGR, and thus, a decrease in PEC and IUGR is not likely to be reversed by antioxidants (Menon 2014). Moreover, antioxidant administration may hinder the physiological activity of ROS (Efimova et al 2011).…”

“…However, there are abundant evidences that the infection/inflammation is strongly related to this syndrome, mostly linked to ascending microorganisms from the lower genital tract [5] [6], in which is present in nearly 50% of PTB and 70% of preterm premature rupture of membranes (pPROM) [7].…”
