Oxaloacetate acid ameliorates paraquat-induced acute lung injury by alleviating oxidative stress and mitochondrial dysfunction

Abstract: Acute lung injury (ALI) is the primary cause of death among patients with acute paraquat (PQ) poisoning, whereby peroxidative damage is an important mechanism underlying PQ-induced lung injury. There is a lack of effective interventional drugs for patients with PQ poisoning. Oxaloacetic acid (OAA) participates in multiple in vivo metabolic processes, whereby it facilitates the clearance of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and improves mitochondrial function. The study aimed to assess the protective effects of OAA… Show more

“…Eubacterium rectale specific metabolites include L-tryptophan, L-glutamine, L-histidine, and isobutyric acid. Two of the 47 unique metabolites also include oxaloacetic acid and indole-3-acetic, which are responsible for fatty acid synthesis and oxidative stress reduction (62), and known to alleviate colitis associated immune responses, respectively (63, 64). The distinct metabolic profile of E. rectale CFSM provides some evidence that this strain may contribute to decrease inflammation by production from multiple metabolic pathways attributed to lower host inflammation.…”

“…Oxaloacetate is an energy metabolite which is reduced in the plasma of ME/CSF patients (Germain et al 2017 ). Supplementation with oxaloacetate seems to reduce inflammation, increases the number of mitochondria, increases glucose uptake, and shows antioxidant activity in experimental studies (Wilkins et al 2014 ; Li et al 2022 ; Cash and Kaufman 2022 ).…”

“…This disturbance triggers further ROS generation, continuing oxidative stress. Oxidative stress activates cellular signalling pathways related to stress responses, inflammation and cell survival, influencing the cellular response to paraquat-induced stress [7].…”
