Ovine Model of Ischemic Mitral Regurgitation

Abstract: Ischemic mitral regurgitation (IMR) is a common complication of ischemic heart disease that doubles mortality after myocardial infarction and is a major driving factor increasing heart failure. IMR is caused by left ventricular (LV) remodeling which displaces the papillary muscles that tether the mitral valve leaflets and restrict their closure. IMR frequently recurs even after surgical treatment. Failed repair associates with lack of reduction or increase in LV remodeling, and increased heart failure and rela… Show more

“…This requires prior validation and establishing the reference intervals of echocardiographic measurements in certain animal species. It is worthy to state that the cardiologist considers goats as an attractive model for experimental human CVD research particularly in certain studies that require fully conscious or exercising animals, flow dynamic research, and atrial fibrillation [3][4][5][6]. Besides, goats are advantageous to other animals because of the easy approach and management, and a relatively reasonable heart and body size comparable to those in humans [7].…”

“…Under general anesthesia with isoflurane and oxygen, inferior MI was created by ligation of the second‐third obtuse marginal branches of the left circumflex coronary artery. 29 , 30 Animals were cared for, with pre‐MI and pre‐euthanasia blood sampling over 10±3 days and were euthanized following thoracotomy for final data collection and tissue harvest. This study conformed to National Institutes of Health animal care guidelines and received institutional Animal Care Committee approval.…”

“…Small ruminants, especially goats and sheep, serve as good experimental models for cardiovascular research purposes because of the average body size, easy management, and relative heart size to those of humans and companion animals [74,75]. In addition, they serve as a potential model to discuss the pathophysiological changes in large ruminants when complex experimental techniques cannot be performed in large animals under farm conditions [76,77].…”
