Disc brakes have evolved over time to be a reliable method of decelerating and stopping a vehicle. There have been different designs of disc brake systems for different applications. This review gives a detailed description of different geometries of the components and the materials used in a disc brake system. In spite of all the improvements, there are still many operational issues related to disc brakes that need to be understood in a greater detail and resolved. There has been a lot of research going on about these issues and at the same time different methods are being proposed to eliminate or reduce them. There has also been an intensive fundamental research going on about the evolution of tribological interface of disc-pad system. One major purpose of the present paper is to give a comprehensive overview of all such developments.

Abstract. Vibrations are undesired phenomenon and it can cause harm, distress and unsettling influence to the systems or structures, for example, aircraft, automobile, machinery and building. One of the approach to limit this vibration by introducing passive vibration absorber attached to the structure. In this paper, the adequacy of utilizing passive vibration absorbers are investigated. The vibration absorber system is designed to minimize the vibration of a thin plate fixed along edges. The plate's vibration characteristics, such as, natural frequency and mode shape are determined using three techniques: theoretical equations, finite element (FE) analysis and experiment. The results demonstrate that the first four natural frequencies of fixed-fixed ends plate are 48, 121, 193 and 242 Hz, and these results are corroborated well with theoretical, FE simulation and experiment. The experiment work is further carried out with attached single and multiple vibration absorbers onto plate by tuning the absorber's frequency to match with the excitation frequency. The outcomes depict that multiple vibration absorbers are more viable in lessening the global structural vibration.

Abstract. Vibrations are always undesirable, wasting energy besides producing noise. In this case, beams which are prominent component in most engineering having no exemption from the vibration effect when imposed by dynamic loading. One of the approach to attenuate vibration of a structure is by having a spring-mass-damper (SMD) system or typically known as vibration neutralizer attached to the vibrating structure. This method is more promising as it does not contribute significant additional energy to the structure. The work presented in this paper describes the frequency response (FRF) of a simply supported beam with an attached SMD system. A mathematical model of a beam was at first developed in the study which was further derived to include the attachment of SMD system. In order to transform the derived equations into a form of graph that can be analysed, Matlab® software was used. The outcome from Matlab® shows that the attachment of SMD onto beam attenuates its vibration significantly. The result also displays a good resemblance FRF when compared with numerical finite element analysis of Ansys®. It is expected that the theoretical derivation demonstrated in this paper provide a helpful reference to future researchers who endeavour to find equations of a simply supported beam with an attached SMD system as well as for a vibration control study.
