Overexpression of Sweet Potato Carotenoid Cleavage Dioxygenase 4 (IbCCD4) Decreased Salt Tolerance in Arabidopsis thaliana

Abstract: Salt stress has a serious impact on normal plant growth and yield. Carotenoid cleavage dioxygenase (CCD) degrades carotenoids to produce apocarotenoids, which are involved in plant responses to biotic and abiotic stresses. This study shows that the expression of sweet potato IbCCD4 was significantly induced by salt and dehydration stress. The heterologous expression of IbCCD4 in Arabidopsis was induced to confirm its salt tolerance. Under 200 mM NaCl treatment, compared to wild-type plants, the rosette leaves … Show more

“…CBF expression responses to the induction of the stress phytohormone ABA. We have found that the overexpression of IbCCD4 decreases salt resistance in Arabidopsis thaliana [61]. The discovery of the direct activation of the IbCCD4 promoter by IbWRKY20 and IbCBF2 provided evidence, perhaps for the first time, for ABA regulation of abiotic stress through modulating carotenoid metabolism.…”

“…The cause of this phenomenon may be associated with CaCl 2 and PEG which further reduce Fe 3+ to Fe 2+ . SOD can catalyze the transformation of superoxide free radical into molecular oxygen and hydrogen peroxide under salt and PEG stresses [31]. Carotenoids were known to have the activity of SOD, which further detoxified cells and protect them from the damage of biochemical substances.…”

“…Carotenoids are an important class of isoprenoid compounds found in plants and animals (Zhang et al ., 2022a). They are polyunsaturated tetraterpenoids synthesised from eight isoprenoid units (Nouchi et al ., 2020).…”
