BackgroundBoth osteoporosis and osteopenia remain worldwide public health concerns. They both lead to bone fractures, which can lead to disability and burden on those who are afflicted.ObjectivesTo assess and compare fracture risk between these two groups of patients.Patients and methodsOur cross-sectional study included 82 patients (46 with osteoporosis and 36 with osteopenia) with an average age of 63±9.33 years, who received treatment at the Clinic for Medical Rehabilitation, Clinical Center of Vojvodina in Novi Sad, Serbia. The assessment of the fracture risk was executed by applying the Fracture Assessment Risk (FRAX) index (an algorithm developed by the World Health Organization) based on clinical fracture risks or combination of clinical fracture risks and bone mineral density.ResultsPatients with osteoporosis had significantly higher risk of major fracture compared to patients with osteopenia (p<0.01). Results from FRAX index in osteoporotic patients showed that more than half (58.70%) of patients had a low risk of fracture; less than one-third of patients (30.43%) had an intermediate risk of major osteoporotic fracture, while almost four out of every 10 (39.96%) had a high risk of hip fracture. The majority of patients with osteopenia (63.89%) had a low risk of major osteoporotic fracture, while 36.11% of them had an intermediate risk. The majority of patients with osteopenia (91.67%) had a low risk of hip fracture. Statistically significant differences in relation to specific fracture risks between patients with osteoporosis and osteopenia, in particular, weight (t=−2.250, p=0.027*) and previous fractures (t=2.985, p=0.004**), were established.ConclusionOsteoporosis patients had a high risk of major osteoporotic fracture, while there was no association between the intermediate level for major osteoporotic fracture and osteo-penia. For patients suffering from an increased fracture risk, especially those who had already been diagnosed with osteoporosis, preventive measures such as designing individual therapeutic programs should be adopted.

Cilj. Procenat žena obolelih od osteoporoze iz godine u godinu se povećava i s tim u vezi cilj rada bio je da se proceni znanje žena u postmenopauzi o osteoporozi i faktorima rizika, kako bi se sprovele adekvatne preventivne mere. Metode. Istraživanje je sprovedeno kao studija preseka, po metodologiji ankete, u Domu zdravlja u Kragujevcu, tokom 2017. i 2018. godine. U studiju su bile uključene žene posle menopauze, starosti preko 50 godina, nezavisno od toga da li boluju od osteoporoze ili ne. Procena znanja vršena je na osnovu OKAT-S (Osteoporosis Knowledge Assessment Tool-Shorter Version) upitnika. Prikupljeni su sledeći podaci o faktorima rizika za osteoporozu: starost, početak i trajanje menopauze, upotreba cigareta, životni stil, redovno izlaganje sunčevoj svetlosti, korišćenje suplemenata vitamina D ili kalcijuma. Podaci su analizirani korišćenjem deskriptivne statistike i testiranjem hipoteze, pri p≤0.05. Rezultati. Ukupno 200 ispitanica, prosečne dobi od 63,6 godina (standardna devijacija 8,5) odgovorilo je na upitnik. Dve ispitanice su tačno odgovorile na sva pitanja, dok 26 ispitanica nije tačno odgovorilo ni na jedno postavljeno pitanje. Nivo njihovog znanja (prema tačnim odgovorima) varirao je od 24.0% do 80.0% ispravnih odgovora. Kod ispitanica u studiji upotreba suplementata vitamina D (32%-da, 68%-ne) i suplemenata kalcijuma (30%-da, 70%-ne) je bila mala, dok je dnevno izlaganje sunčevim zracima (minimum 15 minuta dnevno) bilo zadovoljavajuće (92%-da, 8%-ne). Zaključak. Znanje žena u postmenopauzi o osteoporozi je vrlo oskudno što zahteva planiranje i sprovođenje odgovarajućih mera edukacije.

Introduction: Osteoporotic fracture is a major public health problem in the pre and peri-menopausal period, associated with substantial morbidity, socio-economic burden and mortality. Poor knowledge and practice related to osteoporosis have been noted worldwide. In Malaysia, few studies have measured the knowledge and practice of osteoporosis among women. Objectives: This study aimed to determine the knowledge and practices of osteoporosis preventive measures among women in Hospital USM. Methods: A cross-sectional study using a validated, self-administered questionnaire about knowledge and practices of osteoporosis measures was employed with 185 hospitalized women in Hospital USM. A simple random sampling was used for the recruitment of participants. The data were analyzed using Chi-Square tests. Results: The Majority of the participants, 67%, belong to 45 -55 age group with a mean age of 50.35 years. The findings indicate 40.5% had a good level of knowledge towards osteoporosis, while 53.5% had a poor practice level. Conclusion: Knowledge of osteoporosis and practices is still at a fair level, affecting osteoporosis prevention practices. Time was spend watching television. Therefore, public health strategies should also be developed in Malaysia to increase women's knowledge of osteoporosis prevention and change lifestyle habits.
