Osteochondral Autograft and Mosaicplasty in the Football (Soccer) Athlete

Abstract: Objective:To evaluate the clinical outcomes of mosaicplasty in the treatment of focal chondral and osteochondral defects of joints among elite football players. Methods:Case series; Level of evidence, 4. The results of mosaicplasty were prospectively evaluated with 1-year intervals with patient-reported outcome measures, radiographs, and sports participation.Results:Sixty-one patients who received mosaicplasty in the knee joint were followed from 2 to 17 years (average, 9.6 years). The International Cartilage R… Show more

“…Gudas et al included competitive or well-trained athletes, whereas the present study did not exclude non-athletes. Several studies indicate that both OAT mosaicplasty and MF provide favourable outcome in small lesions [ 4 , 8 , 25 , 31 , 34 ]. The fact that relatively small-sized lesions <2 cm 2 were included and that lesions >4 cm 2 were excluded in the Gudas study might in part explain the apparently better results at follow-up in that study compared to the present study.…”

“…However, a firm conclusion is yet to be established as results are contractionary, possibly due to great differences in study design. 11 , 12 , 13 , 14 , 15 , 16 , 17 , 18 …”

“…5 In such a setting characterized by the continuous development of novel techniques and materials, microfracture performed using the Stedman procedure still represents the most adopted method to repair chondral defects. [6][7][8][9] The biological rationale of this reparative technique is based on direct stimulation of the subchondral bone mesenchymal cells having a high chondrogenic differentiation potential.…”
