Abstract: Skeletal ingrowth to vitreous carbon was tested by means of bicortical corrugated vitreous carbon dowels of various groove sizes in dog femora and humeri. After a 4‐week ingrowth period, resistance of the implants to push out loads ranged from 66 to 100 kg. Comparable data was obtained from similar sized polymethylmethacrylate and vitreous carbon‐coated graphite implants. Histologic acceptability of the vitreous carbon appeared excellent in terms of minimal foreign body giant cell and fibrous tissue responses.…
