Os registros linguísticos dos viajantes naturalistas Emmanuel Pohl (1782-1834) e Auguste de Saint-Hilaire (1779-1853)

Abstract

During the first quarter of the nineteenth century, Brazil received many naturalist travelers who entered into regions hitherto little or nothing known by other European nations. By traveling the inland provinces, these scientists encountered not only the nature still little studied, but also various indigenous peoples in different stages of approach of the colonization fronts. Among the naturalist travelers of the first quarter of the nineteenth century, this study aims to analyze the production of word lists by Emmanuel Pohl (1782-1834) and Auguste de Saint-Hilaire (1779-1853), who carried out their scientific journey through the Brazilian territory almost at the same time, also coursing common portions. These two naturalists are also responsible for the linguistic only records known of South Cayapó from the village of San José de Mossâmedes, Goiás.
